I hate my body.

Anonymous
Just caught a glimpse of my naked self in the mirror and I am disgusted.
I work so hard to eat well, take my synthroid, and workout (6x/week), but I cannot get below 170 lbs. and SO flabby and lumpy and gross.
I don't understand what it will take.

If I cut out my 2 glasses wine/week & occasional meal out, will it lead to weight loss? Or do I just suck it up and get over the fact that I'll always loathe myself?

I'm sorry.

OP - is your body strong, is it healthy, does it do what you need it to? I can only suggest cutting carbs, but it sounds like you probably know that. If you eat less pasta and bread products you might find that you have dropped weight effortlessly. That's what happened to me. I'm sure your body is not as awful as you think it is, but instead of trying to make your body conform to some unobtainable ideal, change the way you think and start appreciating your body for all the things it's capable of. Go get a great haircut and experiment with make-up. Buy some clothes that flatter your body - there are flattering clothes for every body type, you just have to keep trying them on until you discover shapes that work best for you. Start with an A-line skirt. They look great on most people. Stay away from pencil skirts. They do not look great on most people. Don't wear capri pants because they shorten your legs, but you might be able to wear a pair that is cropped at the ankle, especially if you have nice ankles. There is a lot you can do. Good luck and don't despair.

OP here.

Thanks; you're right in that I'm healthy and my body does what I need it to.
I dress pretty well which is why this only really gets to me when I examine my body naked. And you know, it's summer, so there are times when I have to be in public in a bathing suit. AAHHH!!!

OP, what's your workout? Maybe you need to change it up a little. If you're not using free weights as a major component of your workout, you should-- weightlifting is what transforms your body. If you are using weights, maybe you need to adjust your workout because after a certain period of time, you hit a plateau and need to change things to continue seeing results.

BTW, not liking how you look naked is a common problem for women of all sizes and ages, so don't beat yourself up about that. Hopefully the only people who see you naked are yourself and your partner anyway.

Re Diet:

I used to be 170 and got down to 130 which I"ve maintained (but I am 5ft 5 in and sort of small boned).

Anyway, cutting out food and alcohol DIDN"T work for me. WHat worked better was making sure I ate 100g of protein and 35 g of fiber a day. Do that, and be relatively healthy about it, and you will be so full that you will not be able to overeat unhealthy stuff.

Also ate a lot of salad and soup. I like volume. Lots of different things work for different people. what you are doing now is not working for you. Might you cut back gym to 4 days/week? Might you lift more (add lifting)? or somehow "shock" your body?

It's half exercise and half diet. keep a food diary to see what you can easily cut out and what you can easily replace. Small lifestyle changes. I should also add that it took me 3 years to loose the weight. But it stuck!

This is great advice. I do the other stuff (weight training, etc), but this is the best diet advice I have heard in a long time and I will definitely try it.

I feel the same way, OP! I got so upset trying on clothes this weekend (first time I'd been shopping in a LONG time). It was such a bad experience that I came home and just sobbed. I have been 135-140 pounds forever, and now I'm at 160. I'm 5'7'' so probably within the 'normal' range, but I am disgusted with myself. I have chronic back problems, so I can't really work out at the level I want (well, I can, but I pay dearly for it the next day). I only have a couple pairs of pants that fit. I have totally ugly legs (not shapely, spider veins, etc.), but I always have been unhappy with them. I avoid pools (unless it's just my DH and DD) and don't wear shorts.

When DH saw how unhappy I was, we had a long talk, and we are both doing the South Beach Diet. (he also needs to lose). We tried it once before, but I got frustrated with the dizzy spells that hit me the first couple weeks when I significantly cut down on my sugar intake. So, I quit. I'm hoping I'll have the resolve to not quit this time. I actually saw results just in those first couple weeks.

It's so hard, but I'm tired of being frustrated. As much as I love Doritos, pasta and white bread, I'm gonna try hard to stick to this.

Just wanted to commiserate and wish you good luck.

PP, how do you eat 100g of protein a day? That seems like so much. Can you give an example of a day's diet? I would love to do this.

^^... great and sensible advice regarding lifting weights.....

Don't be intimidated by the free weights, barbells...they will help transform your body....Strength train and progressively add weights.....eat at a slight calorie deficit .... I promise you wont bulk up... Do compound exercises to get the best out of your workout time...squats, deadlifts, bench press, rows, military presses, glute bridges etc etc...

yes on the lean protein and also make sure u have enough good fats .... I too eat atleast 120 grams of lean protein a day and 50 grams of fat.... lots and lots of water every single day...I lift 3xweek and do cardio( run/kickbox/bike) for about 45 mins 3x week...people always think i weigh 20 lbs lighter than i do...Muscles are compact compared to fat and u will fit into smaller clothes at the same weight if your body fat % is lowered..

And OP ..love your body and be patient...If u strength train you most likely wont see the scales moving that fast.....but keep taking pics and measurements every 2 weeks or so....U will be amazed at what your body is capable of...

Good luck....

Op here. Thanks for the advice but I have done all of those things for years. I'm not a person who has been eating chips and now wants to lose.
I eat a healthy diet, low-carb, minimal processed food, count calories, and workout with strength training.

I just have a gross body anyway. And I hate it. the 100g protein suggestion is one i HAVEN'T tried. if anyone else has innovative suggestions, I'd love to hear then.

OP here. I should also mention that I had a baby 7 months ago and I hate my body MORE now. But i always struggled with this. I'm just finding that losing weight was hard before but impossible now.

Yeah. The thyroid issue has been a killer for me. A few years ago, I gave up all soda. Like not a drop. I drank water only. I have one glass of wine or less per month. I cut that out. My diet is good -- not a big sweet tooth. I might have dessert a couple times per month and that is like a scoop of ice cream. I worked with a trainer once a week, walked 2 miles every morning with the dog and turned myself inside out to fit in 2 more gym workouts per week. I did not lose an ounce. My body did not change one single bit. My size didn't change. I hate my thyroid. I am sure my husband is digusted with me. I know I am, but short of actually starving myself I really don't know what else to do. And I have posted about my experience before and many people chime in and say oh you must have been eating kit kats by the dozen and lying about it. No. In fact, several co-workers asked me multiple times if I was eating enough when I had black bean soup and water for lunch weeks on end. I just didn't know what else to do. I had been eating 1200-1500 calories plus maintaining a solid exercise program and everything I read said weight loss is 70% what you eat. So I reduced my calories and still not an ounce. Oh well. I feel your pain and if anyone has any solutions I would love to hear them too.

Hire a trainer. There's no reason for you to be flabby/hate your body if you're working out as much as you say you are.
