Asian American students at private schools?

I am not the OP, but all I wanted to know from this thread was whether or not there were a representative sampling of the various Asian countries at the big 3 that is somewhat in concordance with the population from which these three schools draw their applicant pool

So being biracial means you aren't "really" Asian? I can't wait to tell my DC when they grow up... Guess what, you don't "belong" in one group or another because you aren't fully of one race. Oh, but maybe the one that has almond-shaped eyes is Asian and the one with round eyes isn't? The ignorance on this board makes me sick.

Where did she say biracial means you aren't Asian? It seems she is trying to explain that some people looking at the schools' Asian population may mistakenly not count half-Asians as Asians, because they might not look it. I am a halfie and I was not offended by her comment. There is truth to what she says, because people (from all races) never think I'm Asian, even though I am. Everyone thinks I'm Latina.

How can you "see" Hispanics if they are white Hispanics? Not all Latinos are Hispanic and not all Hispanics are brown.

Sorry, but most, even the "White" ones, are of a slightly different hue, which I can see.

Then I guess you've never been to Spain or seen Argentines. They're about as white as can be and don't have any hue. Half the Argentine population is of Italian extraction since there was such a large Italian immigration influx into Argentina in the early 1900s.

I have been to Spain and Italy, and I know about Argentina's immigration.
People from the Mediterranean look darker than those from say the British Isles, so in a play ground I can spot a child of Spanish or Italian descent and one of Northern European descent. Some Europeans say that Africa starts south of the Pyrenees, some say it starts south of the Alps. The Argentineans who look White are often of German and Irish descent, same for other whites in S. America.
I am a bit concerned about so many people from Latin American obviously going out of their way to emphasize that they are White. Perhaps they think it will elevate them socially if they display their pedigree. But be careful, genetics have the last word. I heard that 86 percent of Brazilians have some African ancestry, while only 6 percent consider themselves Black.

Ummm - I am a full blooded, SOUTHERN Italian FLUENT in the language, and I'm as white as they come! NO ONE ever asks if I'm Italian. So let's just knock out skin color.

OK - PP Italian here again - What an INCREDIBLY racist comment. You are "concerned?" Who are YOU to be concerned? Being white "elevates" someone's status? And then you mix in "be careful" with "86 percent of Brazilians have some African ancestry?" And what, may I ask is the last word that you associate with genetics? White supremacy?

I've met pale blonde Brazilians, to dark curly haired Brazilians, and every shade between, but none of them seem to be caught up with how dark/light they are...they think of themselves as Brazilians. In the many Brazilian classes and events I've been to, they seem to celebrate all roots of there culture (Portuguese, African and Native) as a blend. Can't we all just be Americans or United Stateseans or whatever you want to call it?

Thanks, Zumbamama. I though my meaning was obvious, but clearly it wasn't. BTW I am Asian American, and my children are half Asian. One looks distinctly Asian; the other does not.

Why are you assuming that the person that wrote that is White?

Actually, I think, yes. Given a choice I check "multiethnic" for my half Asian, half Caucasian children.

I have an idea! We can create names for people who are biracial, as is my son. He's a Caucapino!

This thread has gotten ridiculous. Who cares if there are more Asians in public than in private? My husband is a brilliant business man but I don't think him being Asian has anyhing to do with it-his cousins definitely don't have a knack for business, or math and science. Oh-but they're Filipino, not Chinese or Korean, which I'm sure says a lot

Hey that was my nickname in highschool! I'm a total art brain and defy every stereotype there is about Asians and Whites. I'm not good at math and I can dance like Beyonce...so there. You can't lump everyone into categories based on how they look or where they come from. I am ME! I am AMERICAN! I am HUMAN! Why is everyone so race-obsessed?

I know why Asians are smarter and perform better in school-as in TJ with a higher ratio of Asians-Asian parents are better at parenting school aged children. How's that for generalizaton!

But not to worry non-Asians, given the levels of outmarriage, we'll soon be down at your level.

Asian families have just as much trouble raising kids as anyone else. Don't forget Virginia Tech.
