Asian American students at private schools?

I have visited Sidwell and GDS and was surprised to see very few Asian American kids. Are there other schools out there with more?

Green Acres has a large Asian/Asian-mixed population.

It's possible that some of the children you took for white were half-Asian. Within our immediate circle, I can think of half a dozen white-Asian couples but not Asian-Asian couples. Some of the children are very difficult to place ethnically.

Funny, I have noticed the same thing, only one Asian child in my son's grade and one in my daughter's, and thought how odd it is.

By Asian do you mean East Asian, or are you including South Asians?

OP: I meant both actually.

what is "very few" to you? What geographical area would you like to reflect? Compared to this entire region, to the West Coast (more Asians) or the 20015/20016 zip codes, where the high schools are located?

in the latter, according to the US Census, we'd expect to find just 1.2 Asians per 24-student classroom. So if you saw only one Asian kid in a big classroom, that's about right for the immediate area.

In San Francisco, 8 out of 24 students should be Asian to accurately reflect the city's composition. In Fairfax County, 2.4 kids per 24 reflects the population. In Silver Spring, 1.6 kids per 24 students.

Point being, if you saw 1, maybe 2 Asian kids in each classroom, that reflects this area and IMO is not "very few."

What I've been wondering on all these tours is, given the demographics of the metro area, really, where are all the African American children?

interesting, i didnt think of it in terms of reflecting the city's demographics. As for the African Americans, I agree. Sidwell claimed 40% students of color. I saw more like 10%.

If you use the same reference point--the 20016 zip code--1 to 2 African-American children per class of 24 would also accurately represent the broader population.

Acc to census data, the 20016 zip code is 5.9 percent Asian "alone and in combination" and 6.5 percent African American "alone and in combination."

yes, and 6% of 24 kids is somewhere between one and two children per class, right?

OP, you also don't see many Hispanics. My friend who is Korean said that Asians don't believe in private school. I have heard that echoed among many Chinese, Koreans, and Vietnamese Americans. That said, you do see TONS of Asians in Montessori schools.

This is an interesting thread..I've never thought about this.

Yes, my point was that 15:52 may have slipped into using different reference points. For Asians, s/he picked the 20015/20016 zip codes. For African Americans, she referred to "the metro area," which is quite a different kettle of fish. If you use the same reference point (and I don't claim that this is it), you should expect to see roughly equal numbers of Asian Americans and African Americans.

Meant to say, "I don't claim that this is the right reference point."
