| Totally unhealthy until diagnosed with gest diabetes at 28 weeks, now 32 weeks and have been doing very well for the past 4 weeks. Gained 26 lbs at 28 weeks, and no weight gain since then. Trying not to gain more than 30-32 lbs. |

Pretty healthy diet prepregnancy. Even healthier first month or so. When first trimester nausea hit, got by on fruit and the healthiest carbs I could find, had to cut way back on greens - supplemented most days with folate if I felt I wasn't getting enough (compared to the very early days when I loaded up on food naturally high in folate) . Slowly brought them back as smoothies. Now I'm back to pretty healthy. I focus on getting healthy fats and protein. I rarely eat complete "junk" food - I do eat occasional chocolate, usually dark, sometimes in form of chocolate covered raisins and occasionally I splurge on something nonsensical like fried pickles or something nuts, but very infrequent.
Generally, I feel very good about my diet. I do not take prenatals. |
I'm eating far far better. I'm fairly overweight and pre-diabetic so the minute I got the BFP I scripted myself a meal plan that involves lots of veggies, some fruits, and vegan protein sources. Started taking flax oil, probiotics, and vitamin D along with the prenatal. Some days it's really hard to choke that raw broccoli down but damnit it is GOING DOWN.

Just wanted to say good for you, PP.

| I'm just going to lay it on the line for you because the truth shall set me free. I am, as Giselle Bundchen described, the proverbial pregnant lady garbage disposal. I ate really cleanly before pregnancy - lean proteins, high fiber, 1-2 "cheats" per week. Since I could not stand to look at any lean meat for most of my pregnancy I am in a sea of waste. All I want is crap. I had a Frosty for lunch and am going to put a hurting on a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch tonight for dinner. |

Definitely much worse that pre-pregnancy. I keep joking that this is definitely DH's baby, because all it will tolerate is crap that he loves and I basically never eat. This baby is subsisting so far on cheese curls and frozen pizza. Seriously, that is the stuff I can most reliably eat. I used to eat very healthy: lots of veggies, low simple carbs, high protein...As an example, I probably ate broccoli at least 3 times a week. I've tried to eat it twice since BFP, both times ended disastrously.
Also, I am generally not fond of sweets...much prefer salty treats to sweet ones. But I find myself craving sweet things. For about a week I was obsessed with wanting cake, something I usually don't even really enjoy. I'm trying to keep the "junk" as "healthy" as possible--organic pizza, real cheese in curls, angel food cake, etc, but overall I'm assuming this is just what baby wants/needs. Also just entering second trimester, so maybe nausea will subside a bit and allow me to eat a little healthier (I hope). In the meantime, just eating what I can stomach (which is weirdly stuff that seems like it would make me sicker). |
| Much worse because I eat a lot more. Pre-preg I could go through the day with just a little food, and I would exercise every day, then eat a large dinner/dessert and call it a day; now I eat breakfast, lunch, dinn, and snacks (not healthy ones). The amount of food I'm eating has increased so significantly I know the weight will be really hard to take off because it's not just "baby" weight. I don't know how women actually improve their diets when they get pregnant. It's been awful for me. Plus the exhaustion makes the frequency/ intensity of exercise I was doing pre-pg impossible. |
| Kind of worse. It was better with number one - I was all about vegetables. This time I'm so nauseous (still at 34 weeks) and nothing sounds good to me except lemonade, milk shakes, and fruit. I of course eat more than that but I haven't so amazingly healthy this time. |

Probably the same, or a bit better. The latter is for three reasons: (1) my husband got me a VitaMix for mother's day, so I've been all about the green smoothies; (2) I discovered Washington's Green Grocer, so have been getting good veggies delivered regularly; and (3) I'm not as hideously sick as I was during my first pregnancy. It feels like a treat to be able to eat a vegetable, so I am.
Of course, I still seem to be gaining weight faster than in my first pregnancy. I'm pretty active, too, so it's extra annoying. But the weight was hard to take off last time (until I weaned), so I'd like to be as healthy as possible, even if only so I can say that I tried my best! |
| Some of these posts make me feel better. My diet is much worse. Before pregnancy I had almost complete self control around food but not so much now. Every time I see or smell something appetizing I need to have it. I try not to give in but it's overpowering. Fruit and veggies don't taste like they used to and I just crave junk. I'm trying so hard to limit my sugar and processed food intake because I don't want to have a huge baby but it's so hard and at 25 weeks I've gained almost 20 pounds. |

Better in the sense that I made more a serious effort to eat leafy greens and other veggies; I am exercising more than I otherwise would; I'm relaxing & praying more (I credit that for my low blood pressure); I'm prioritizing sleep and have given up caffeine; and I'm taking at least some vitamins. I also just feel healthier.
Less healthy in the sense that I am eating way more brownies, cookies, and overall larger servings than are necessary. But my weight gain is in check and my blood sugar levels are solid, so I'm not worried about it. |

Some women crave nothing but fried chicken all pregnancy long. I would say that during the pregnancy --keep your veggie and fruit intake high and eat a reasonable amount of anything else. You can work off the pregnancy weight later with diets like dukan diet weight loss coaching but that doesnt mean you throw excercising out the window. Walking is a great way to do lighter excercise on a regular basis and make sure you don't gain an enormous amount of weight and yet be able to indulge in those cravings.

| About the same. I don't feel bad when I want extra carbs because I also make a point to eat extra veggies and protein and avoid the really pointless things like deep fried. My weight gain has been reasonable, and much less than with my first. |

I will say, like many pregnant women, I went gung-ho on healthy eating UNTIL the nausea hit. It was all downhill from there! By month 5 I felt like the baby was squishing my stomach, so I had eating difficulties. I ate whatever I could tolerate. Lots of pizza. I remained perfectly healthy. |
