Is it the weekend before the 4th or after? I googled it and it says the federal holiday is on the Wed. Really? It's not observed the Monday before or the Friday after?
Trying to plan a party when people will be in town. |

Feds only get the actual 4th off.
If it falls on a Saturday- get the Friday off. Falls on a Sunday- get Monday. Usu. have 2 hr early release day before (this case tues). |

| The legal holiday is only on a Monday or Friday if the holiday falls on a weekend. Since it is on a Wednesday this year, you get to pick which weekend you want to call the "4th of July weekend", but you don't get a three-day weekend out of it. It works the same way for all holidays that fall of specific dates.(Christmas, New Years, etc) |

| I own my own business, so I always work! All I remember is that in grad. school holidays were always shifted to make long weekends. I'm just inviting a lot of neighbors who are feds. |

Exactly! The reason they change the day you observe the holiday is just so people can actually HAVE a holiday, if it falls on Saturday or Sunday, not to give you a three-day weekend nor to make it convenient to throw a party. You pick either the weekend before or the weekend after to call it 4th of July weekend and that's about it. |

Yes but if it falls on Tuesday many people take or companies give Monday off (non-Feds), same goes with Thur-Fri. So the holiday weekend is still apparent. I have family flying in the weekend before, but obviously it could go either way. |

4th of July falls into the same category as Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years in that the day off is given on the day of. As mentioned previously, if the 4th (or any of those other aforementioned holidays) falls on a weekend, then you get an in-lieu-of holiday, which is the Friday before if the holiday is on Saturday and the Monday after if the holiday is on Sunday. When the holiday does not fall on a Wednesday, typically the "4th of July weekend" is the one closest to the actual holiday, since people often take the lone day between it and the weekend off. It's a crap shoot when the 4th falls during the middle of the week.

| Yes, people TAKE OFF the day between the weekend an the holiday when the holiday is on Tuesday or thursday. They are not GIVEN that day off, like OP said. |
