If you still get Netflix DVDs by mail . . .

how do you find the quality of the DVDs?

We have only had Netflix for a few months (I know, I know, DH decided to join right before they raised the prices) and I swear we are like 50/50 for the DVDs being scratched or unwatchable. I'm getting ready to cancel it because the combination of being overpriced AND the frustration of sitting down to watch a movie and having it cut off halfway through is just too much.

Wondering if I've had a string of bad luck or if they continually send out scratched or damaged DVDs.
It doesn't seem like quality control should be that difficult, but I've been shocked by how frequently we have gotten bad DVDs from them.

I do the online ones but the problem is that, most of the movies I want to watch are not available online.

I used to have the same problem with the DVDs. Do you try washing them with soap and water?

Maybe not 50/50, but we get scratched/unplayable discs pretty frequently -- maybe 1 or 2 of 10. Your rate probably varies with the kind of DVDs that are on your queue. We get a lot of kid stuff right now and my recollection is that adult stuff (R and PG-13 movies, TV shows) tend to be scratched more frequently. We just send them back and report the disc as damaged. It never occurred to me to be bothered by it, but I guess they should check discs once they get them back in to make sure they can be played before sending them to another customer.

We've had it for several years and used to get 2-3 movies per week. Now, its maybe 1 a week. In all that time, we have had a damaged cd twice. Sounds like your experience is a fluke--I hope it improves for you and that they do take quality control seriously.

I used to have that problem a lot and then I read somewhere that our DVD player (Sony?) was notorious for being picky. Eventually we got new (bluray) DVD player and haven't had any problems.

I haven't had a problem, except for the Big Lebowski DVD we got that kept skipping. We took it out, and it had a few sticky splotchs on it. I'm guessing it was from a white russian! Anyway, we wiped it off and it was fine after that.

Really? One those rare occasions when we finally get the kids in bed and aren't exhausted ourselves, and we sit down to watch a movie, and we're enjoying it, and then it cuts off after the first hour, it irritates the hell out of me! You must be one of those really calm, pleasant people who doesn't get annoyed by little things!

I just think with the monthly cost, you shouldn't have to wash the DVDs with soap & water or repeatedly send them back for replacement when they are damaged. They should be able to send out discs that play properly. There was one movie that was damaged, we sent it back, and they sent us a second damaged disc of the same movie!!!

I will have to check our DVD play to see if it's a Sony. Maybe it's "picky" like PP's.

We get Blu-Rays by mail and we've never had an unwatchable disc. We've had the Blu-Ray subscription for two years now and before that we got DVDs by mail for three years and never had an unwatchable disc. I guess we've been lucky!

We have had Netflix for several years..and very few issues. I remember 1 and am probably forgortting another but we are gnerally happy. Also had a blockbuster subscription at one point..now that was a disaster. They once sent us one that was literarly cracked 1/2.

We still get Netflix on DVD and we have for years. It used to be that they were very rarely damaged but I have noticed that recently it is like 50/50 are damaged. And I can't imagine how someone could not be annoyed by that. I rarely get to sit down and watch a grownup movie that I actually am interested in and when huggy and I have the kids in bed and popcorn and wine and the movie is good and then we can't finish watching it, it ruins the weekend. The person who said they weren't bothered by it must be a troll - or maybe its just the kids stuff that she gets that has been damaged that she didn't want to watch anyway? In any case, we are thinking of just cancelling Netflix as their selection and quality has declined dramatically. Its a shame we used to be so happy with them. And there are so many other options its difficult to decide what to do instead.

I am 11:14 and I will say the first time or so it happened it was not that big a deal but it got increasingly annoying. Especially because the symptom for us would be that it would skip or pause and you would stop being engrossed in the movie while you waited see if that was it, and then a few minutes later the whole thing would just stop, or else it would just not let you watch a specific scene, so once you got to that point you had to get up, wash the disk, and then try and find where you were and get back into the movie and hope it didn't happen again.

Very infrequently with netflix however all the time with Redbox

It doesn't happen very frequently. More frequently a disc is dirty and needs to be washed before it will play, and that doesn't happen so often either.

Actually, I feel like it has been happening more recently. Not sure if that is because of them or are machine is getting older and pickier.

We get blockbuster.com (although who knows for how much longer, since they seem to be poised to go out of business). The DVD's are usually fine; I can recall only about 2 or 3 problems over several years.
