Coconut Water

I've been reading up on the many benefits of coconut water. Does anyone know where I can find some? Do they sell it at Safeway or Target, or would I need to go to Whole Foods or an Asian grocery? I've seen coconut milk at Safeway, but not water.

Whole foods sells it. Read an article some time ago saying it's all just hype. I still buy it for taste.

Trader Joe's sells the Zico brand of coconut water. Costco has sold two types- Vita Coco and another type. Think I've seen Vita Coco at Target. I think Giant and the other large chains would have it in the international aisle, although they usually have the sugar added variety (tastes a lot sweeter than the Zico or Vita).

What were the benefits you read about? I think you will get diarrhea if you drink too much.

OP here, I was reading about it's ability to replenish fluids after working out, boosting immune system, being good for skin and urinary tract health. I read some of the hype articles, which basically say not to believe that it is cure all for specific illnesses, or that it is an energy drink. But even those articles said that it is still a good source of electrolytes and not a bad beverage choice.

Supposed to have more potassium than a banana I think

I picked up some cans at Giant on sale this week. $1/can for a large can (like 20 oz). Look in the ethnic food aisle (Asian section) instead of the beverage section.

It worked great when I was in Thailand and had a massive hangover. Of course there you just buy the fresh coconut and they slice the top off and shove a straw in it.

I think I've seen it in the produce section in Safeway.

NP here. I just saw it at TJ's the other night. I'm curious about it too. Silly question but does it taste good? Just like coconut? Does it have a milky quality or is it clear?

I buy coconut water from amazon. They have all brands and each brand goes on sale, every once in a while, making them very economical. I like Zico and Vita Coco brands.

In India, where I grew up, fresh coconut water was used to alliviate the appetite loss after flu. I know it works, beacuse I have used it. Yes, it is a very good natural source of potassium and it contains lower calories than many sports drink. It is a new thing in Amrican in the last couple of years, but most south asians drink it regularly.

Do not buy canned coconut water. It does not taste natural. Buy the ones with tetra pack and check the ingradient to make sure it contains only coconut water.

Thanks for the tip, pp. (I'm OP). I plan to pick some up today and try it. I haven't had any since my visit to south Asia 20 years ago, and it was straight out of the coconut there. I had forgotten all about coconut water until I read an article about it.

DS wanted to try fresh coconut so we bought one and opened it up at home. The "water" inside did not taste good to us at all.

I saw a TV report about it & how popular it has become. But it seemed to be a hype and they showed how some of the brands are really high in calories so you're just undoing what you've done at the gym.

They sell it at Wegmans as well. I tried it once, but really disliked the taste.
