Confess to eating things you shouldn't?

Anonymous
My mom is a labor & delivery nurse. I called her *in tears* when I was about 5-6 weeks because I accidentally ate a tiny amount of bleu cheese. She really, really had to talk me down.

Of course she told the doctors and nurses at work (with my permission, of course) - they know these lists terrify us, especially in the 1st trimester when it's all you can do to keep food down.

Last night I dreamed I accidentally ate a turkey sandwich. I love turkey sandwiches (Potbelly, how I miss your turkey goodness!). I've joked that if I'd known what was about to happen, I would have put the sex on hold and gone downstairs to make myself a turkey sandwich.

I came damn close to going to McDonald's today, but managed to squash that urge.

I do eat commercial mayo (i.e., in a jar), and have a very limited amount of Coke if I feel a migraine coming on. But my true area of guilt is sugar. I know I'm eating too much sugar, mostly in the form of carbs, but at 9 weeks I'm basically just doing the best I can to eat.

If you buy mayo or Caesar salad dressing from a store, it's fine. It doesn't have raw eggs. Most restaurants aren't going to be making it with raw eggs either.

I literally laughed out loud! Thank you!

I am dying for a Potbelly turkey sandwich and I am not even a big turkey fan. I am flying out of BWI next Sat and they have one in the Delta terminal, so I have been looking forward to having it there. I figured it would be somewhat heated and maybe safer? Guess I will be stuck with Wendy's - blech! These restrictions suck!!!!!!!!!!

I don't get these posts. Do people really mean they are eating things they shouldn't eat or do they mean eating things some list said they shouldn't, but in consultation with their prenatal care provider, they've decided there is no real risk or the risk is so small as to be worth taking? I don't eat anything that I don't think I should. I do consume on average about 100 mg of coffee per day but this is based on the fact that my OB and everything I have read states that less than 200 mg per day is safe combined with the fact that my toddler is going through a major sleep regression and I simply couldn't function without it. (PP, I think you'd need about 6 cans of coke to reach 200 mg.) I also eat moderate amounts of seafood, even some that are not the very lowest levels of mercury, but, again, I eat what research and my OB has assured me is safe. Everyone has a differentl list of what they avoid as does everyone's OB. And some stuff is harder to avoid for different people. But I don't understand some of the posts from people who are almost bragging about what a bad ass they are for eating stuff that they shouldn't.

I ate raw cookie dough yesterday. Thought about it as I was doing it, and decided it was worth the risk.

I don't drink much caffeinated Diet Coke but I do drink the de-caf version. My point was that even though artificial sweeteners have been shown to be safe in pregnancy I feel as though it would be better to avoid them (which I haven't done to my own satisfaction and feel somewhat guilty about).

Well, I was about to admit that sometimes I have just red wine and chocolate for dinner but then realized that this thread is in the Expectant Moms forum. Oops! (The red wine probably contributed to getting pregnant a little unexpectedly, though.)

I did eat sushi several times while pregnant. NYTimes had an article about how sushi likely got put on the "no" list more because it is culturally "foreign" and not due to actual scientific evidence. Apparently the safety standards are so high for sushi that it is, in fact, much safer to eat than chicken.

There was another PP who "confessed to drinking real Coke, presumably worried about the caffeine. I figured your Diet Coke confession related to artificial sweetener, which I personally avoid, but I don't like diet soda or artficial sweeteners much anyway, so for me, it's easy That's one of those things where if you are used to quite a few diet cokes a day, I can imagine it would be hard to eliminate completely, so you make the best decision you can for you.

Ice cream cake. We have a ridiculous amount left over after our shower, and my husband is off dairy so it's all on me.

I could use some homemade buttercream frosting now!

Don't see anyone on here feeling bad ass....I am a PP and freely admit I indulge in something or other on occasion but I am just more relaxed about these lists than some. I have gotten more and more so with each pregnancy and also the lists have gotten more restrictive with each pregnancy. I think this is probably just an individual choice. Everyone needs to do what they are comfortable with, period. But for those of us who are choosing a more relaxed approach I doubt we consider ourselves rebels lol - just like those of us who are being vigilant with the list don't consider themselves paranoid or over the top.

I felt so much better about it after posting here. DH found it in the fridge about an hour ago:
DH - What is this white stuff?
Me- Frosting
DH - What is it for?
Me - To eat.

Silence. I can only imagine what he might be thinking.

Potbelly's turkey sandwiches. Glass of wine here and there (sometimes twice a week) since second tri. Too much seafood I'm sure (even though it wasn't the really bad kind) - it's sometimes all I can stomach and I need the protein!

Hot dogs. Tuna. Caffeinated coffee. The occasional bite of raw sashimi. A glass of beer. Never very often.
