Dear birthers, what's your new excuse going to be?

In the alternative, I take Trumo one better and say that if your grades were not good enough to get you into a MoCo highly gifted and talented class in forth grade, you are not eligible to be US President.

Sorry, for typos on I'll, Trump and fourth.

You got the sign wrong. If you grades are good enough, then you are not eligible.

His father was a Kenyan. Since both parents were not in fact, citizens, can he be "natural born"?
I'm not making this one up. Coming from the guy in the cubicle next to me.
But it got me wondering... can babies that are born via c-section or conceived via IVF be President? After all, they are not "natural" born.

Although I am not an expert, nor am I clear that there is actually any definitive answer, the best I have gleaned is that born in the US and subject to its jurisdiction (not the child of a foreign diplomat, e.g.) is the legal meaning of "natural born"; it has nothing to do with the method of birth. I think it is generally understood that a child born to someone serving the US overseas (like McCain) would probably also qualify. But a child of a US citizen satisfying certain conditions, if born abroad (such as Obama, had he been born in Kenya), would be a citizen at birth, but probably would not qualify as natural born for purposes of presidential qualification.

I hope anyone more expert will correct this.

Well for one thing his mother was a citizen. And Hawaii was a state when he was born. *sigh*

None of this matters as the Lolbirthers will never ever shut up because he is not white. If he were they would have nothing to say about Obama--he may be one of the most conservative Democrat this country has ever had. The very idea that they place that SLUMLORD FARTSTACK, TRUMP as their hero over Obama, proves that they callow, shameful, racists.

You win the thread. He's a non-white guy with a name unlike anyone from my high school; therefore, he is not an American. That's literally all they need to know.

Wanted to quote this piece from TPM, since it's unlikely that any right-wing DCUM readers would actually go there:

As I noted yesterday, there's a vast sociological literature demonstrating that after the central prediction of apocalyptic cults goes unfulfilled many of members of the group will not give up but rather intensify their belief. And so it goes with birtherism in the aftermath of the release of President Obama's 'long form' birth certificate.

So as we move into D Day +1 I've been trying to put together a new and workable taxonomy of birtherism. And here are my preliminary findings. Notwithstanding birtherism's roots in xenophobia and racism, the reactions have nonetheless been diverse. The birther movement has broken up into three broad contingents, with at least some overlap between the groups.

First comes what I'll call 'Fine, Whatever! Post-Birthers'. These are the people who recognize, more or less grudgingly, that the release of the long form birth certificate finally settles whatever remote doubt might have existed over where President Obama was born and thus whether he is eligible to serve as president. The key though is that pretty few actual birthers fall into this category. Most were 'birther curious' politicians who never came down hard in favor of birtherism.

Second comes what I now term 'Forensic Denialist Long Form Birthers'. These are the folks who going on very theories deny or doubt the authenticity of the document released yesterday. Orly Taitz appears to be in this category, claiming, with no apparent reason, that an authentic document would have identified Obama's father as "Negro" as opposed to "African." More creatively, Jerome Corsi, author of the swift boat smear and leading birther now calls the Nordyke twins -- two girls born one day after Obama -- represent the "Rosetta Stone" of birtherism because the numbers on their birth certificates are lower than Obama's notwithstanding being born a day later.

Most intriguing and the final broad category are the Racialist Birther Triumphalists. This group accepts the birth certificate as proof that Obama was born where and when he claims. But that doesn't matter, they argue. And the birth certificate actually proves that President Obama's father was not a citizen of the United States at the time of his birth. Ergo, seemingly based on no existing constitutional argument, Obama himself is not a 'natural born' citizen although he is a 'native born' citizen. Even within the RBT category, there appears to be a division between those who say Obama isn't natural born because his dad was not a US citizen and those who claim that Obama is actual a dual-citizen of the British Empire, based on his father's birth, and thus not capable of being President.

Those seem to be the three broad categories -- Ryan Reilly has more details about the different permutations here. And further complicating the story is that many people, Corsi being one, seem to be both in the Forensic Denialist camp and the Racialist Birther Triumphalist camp.

I'm still working on limning the contours of the long form birther era. If you've got more subgroups or details or suggested revisions, please let me know.

Late Update: TPM Reader JL notes an important subgroup within 'Fine, Whatever! Post-Birtherism.' That is 'Fine, you're still black so how'd you get into Harvard' post-birtherism most associated with Donald Trump.

Later Update: I'd neglected to note another subgrouping within Racialist Birther Triumphalists, though this one possibly might even be another genus. That's the 'Renouncers'. Phil Berg for instance argues that a school boy Obama renounced his US citizenship and took Indonesian citizenship when he lived there as a child.

Well I can knock out the Racialist Birther Triumphalists. Chester Arthur's father was not a citizen when he was born.

Woodrow Wilson's mother was foreign born, although I don't know if or when she was naturalized. Both of Hoover's parents were immigrants, and again I don't know when or if they became citizens.

Then again, they were all white guys.

I thought the "is Hawaii really a state" thing was pretty funny so I used it on FB. Here's the response I got from a birther:

"We don't care about Hawaii and it's statehood, that has nothing to do with it. Why don't you all drink some more Obummer Kool-Aid, he's done such a fabulous job so far. For the first time in my life I'm ashamed of what our government stands for. If we don't get this snake-oil salesman out of the District we are all gonna be very sorry."

So how's that for a well thought out argument?

For the first time in your life you're ashamed of the US govt? Really? Iran Contra doesn't shame you? Ollie North and Fawn Halls underwear - no shame? BJs in the oval office anyone? Bombing civilians? Murdering Agfan civilians? Tuskeegee syphyllis study? No it's a black man with a Kenyan dad and a weird name that leaves you foaming at the mouth. Do these people even posess enough introspection to recognize WHY they react so viscerally?

Wait there's more! The logic of a birther:

Mr. Obama presented 2 forms of ID, (to obtain a passport) his Illinois DL and that forgery of a live birth document. (if that document were real it ...would have been on file in his dossie, it wasn't, he used Senate diplomatic privlege to secure his executive clearance) Don't give me this left wing right wing bullshit, do you not even see what the hell is happening to our country? He has turned his back on Israel, stopped making any in roads on relationships with anyone but Islamic states, I don't know what rag and news sources you are listening to and reading but your information is colored with the same Kool-aid you've been drinking. That health care bill you and your wife are so proud of is unconstitutional and will not hold up to legal scrutiny. It will be struck down. He is borrowing money to the tune of over 4 BILLION dollars a day, and the dollar is falling, the economy is stagnant and the only thing making money is precious metals. I cannot even begin to touch on the things this guy has screwed up, I am quite shocked at your willingness to give him 4 more years. I never voted for him, and I think the American people were hood-winked and duped into hiring an unqualified snake oil salesman as the chief executive. We have now witnessed the biggest mistake ever made by the American voting public, we don't have to wait for history to show us that. I can't believe your buying into this load of crap, you used to be so politically aware.

The only thing making money is precious metals -- and the stock market, and corporate earnings. And small business.

He isn't leading us to ruin because he is half-african or he has a Kenyan dad. He is leading us to ruin because he is in over his head and has horrible leadership skills.
