The jury is still out on whether it is a choice, genetic, a mental illness or any number of other possibilities - so until the science is more settled, I'd rather err on the side of caution. Show me the "gay gene" and I'd be inclined to change my mind.

You know I've been saying that for years about left-handed people. Giving them left-handed scissors and left-handed desks just legitimizes them too much in my opinion. It's wrong that right-handed society should have to make any accommodations to left-handed people, especially since we know they can all learn to write with their right hand.

Actually, very few major accommodations are given to left-handed people. Ever see a car for lefties being driven in the USA?
Irrelevant analogy. Ever see a car for righties in the UK?

Silly me. I thought we were talking about unfairness and gay marriages as both relate to the USA.
Let me spell it out for you. The point is that the "handedness" of cars is irrelevant. It has to do do with which side of the road you drive on.

It's certainly relevant as regards lefties in the USA; there's only one choice for driving. We're not talking about England, Scotland, etc. here.
Okay you just don't get that this is not an adequate analogy. I see that.

Btw, I do get your point--nicely sarcastic about the lefties. Quite clever. I really was just trying to give a little aside that lefties (not that there's true discrimination there) don't have it so easy. :0)

Show me the hetero gene, otherwise I am not convinced your straightness is a choice.

Sorry. Should read "not a choice."

Really. You think that a scarcity of left handed scissors is the same as not being able to talk to a doctor about your dying spouse or lacking marital inheritance.

The only thing that hurts being a lefty is that shell casings eject in your face when you fire a gun. Other than that, it's just a matter of finding a set of lefty golf clubs and scissors and learning not to smear ink as you write.

Oh, the one other thing that sucks is when people try to force you to be a right hander. That sucks. Don't try to force someone to be straight, either.

You must be purposefully trying not to get what I'm saying. I stated it's not true discrimination against lefties--just a little aside. Oh, well. Hope you have a good day.

Well then you are running out of actual points. Was the thing about lefties just some sort of irrelevant musing?

I'd like to follow up on that one. Comparing the way society treats gays and straights, it's clear that the only one it makes sense to choose is straight. And there are plenty of examples of gays who choose to be straight (at least in public). It happens at all levels in society, but entertainment and politics are the most visible, going back to Rock Hudson and probably many earlier actors, and recently in politics, Republican Ken Mehlman (and even more recently anti-gay Brooklyn Democrat Carl Kruger http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/03/anti-gay-state-senators-secret-gay-life-is-revealed-in-bribery-indictment.php).

Can anyone give an example of a straight guy who thought to himself "Gosh, it sure would be fun to go out and get beaten up as a fag!"

Pedophiles are the same way. Even though society looks down on them and they get beat up in prison they cannot help themselves.

Great argument. Blacks got mistreated by society and cannot help the color of their skin. By your moronic logic, black people and pedophiles must be the same, too. Are you unaware of your logical error, or are you just being an ass?

I'm still not comfortable with gay adoption to be honest.

I'm not super comfortable with a lot of people's parenting styles. In fact, I wonder if some people should be parents at all. But it is not for me to decide. Nor is it for you, PP, to decide whether or not gay folks should adopt or marry.

The bond between penis and rectum is much stronger and uplifting than any nasty heterosexual, newt gingrich, baby making, biblical marriage crap.

It's not the same, though. Homosexuality is most likely biological -- either genes or prenatal factors -- like exposure to the mother's androgens during pregnancy.
"Although there continues to be controversy and uncertainty as to the genesis of the variety of human sexual orientations, there is no scientific evidence that abnormal parenting, sexual abuse, or other adverse life events influence sexual orientation." AAP (2004)

Pedophilia, on the other hand, is overwhelmingly psychosocial in origin, with very little evidence pointing to genetics or prenatal factors. And abusive parenting and childhood sexual abuse, while having no impact on sexual orientation, are high risk factors for creating a pedophile.

sure as heck isn't genetics. It would be the first gene weeded out of the gene pool unless you don't believe in Darwin, natural selection or evolution.
