It looks like boy's volleyball is going to be a varsity sport in FCPS high schools this year.
How competitive will it be to get on teams?

I have four boys and cannot think of any of their friends who have played volleyball.

OTOH, there are so few varsity sports teams that aren't crazy competitive such that it
might attract athletic kids new to the sport.
How hard is it for a good athlete to pick up?

It was a club sport previously rather than an official VHSL sport.

Here's an initial schedule for the matches featuring Patriot District teams.

And a good number of the now college aged boys in our small neighborhood did play rec volleyball when they were in HS. I don't know the younger families well enough to know if any of their kids currently do.

This doesn't affect me at all; my DC does a sport that doesn't compete for gym space. But I can easily believe that there are kids who will welcome this opportunity.

I think it is going to vary a lot by school. Some schools had multiple club teams, but will only have one varsity team, those will be harder to make than the schools without any previous club teams.

Glad they added it. Boys from Woodson in particular showed up at School Board meetings for several years lobbying for its addition.

What ever do you mean?

Girls volleyball, fine, but it is ridiculous to suggest that “fall workouts” for a winter sport should get gym space over a fall sport. The vast majority of kids who make their HS basketball teams in FCPS are in club teams and can do fall workouts with them.

There is no space at many fcps hs for more
Sports. FCPS did not seem to consider this at all. Many school are packed to the gills and don't have space for anything else. Our HS has one gym, no auxiliary space.

MCPS has this as well. I know a few friends' boys in other states who got college scholarships. My kid is very tall with huge hands so I think he would do well. He says it is still a "girls" sport. Hoping he changes his mind when school starts.

The new boys volleyball coach came to my son's off season HS basketball workout a few weeks ago and tried to pitch it as a great fall sport for basketball conditioning. Didn't get any takers though.
