I hate dogs, kids and DH want one

As others say, it can go either way. Dogs are a lot of work. My situation is opposite of yours: I love dogs, disliked cats, never wanted to have one. Family wanted to a cat and dog is not in the cards anyway for a variety of reasons. So we got a cat -- I picked her (or maybe she picked me?). Now I am absolutely smitten with her. She on my lap as I type this. But I can see how, had she not turned out to be the best cat ever, it would have been very hard on me because most of cat care (litter box etc) is on me.

Who cares?

The issue here is that it is unfair to OP to guilt her into getting a dog she doesn’t want.

It can be both. Unfair to op and the dog

It’s unfair to the dog to have to live in a household with someone who hates it and doesn’t want it around. Please don’t get one.

I would suggest that OP join in the decision on which dog to get, so she can choose one that is gentle with cats. Maybe she will learn to love dogs in time, but if that doesn’t happen, she can always have a cat of her own and that shouldn’t be a problem with the dog. 😊

This! Both my husband and I are cat people. My daughter while she likes cats she wants a dog. We told her when she moves out and has her own place she can get whatever kind of legal pet she wants. But this land is catland.

Draw up a contract with family member about what they believe they will do when they get a dog. Don't let them over commit. See if you want to fill in the gaps or can afford to pay a dog walker to fill in the gaps.

Our dog, which i did not want, has filled a gap in our family i did not know was there, but all the people are right when they say it builds some annoyance when I have to pick up the slack. But my teenagers love their dog and it is heart warming to see, and I am so happy I got them I dog, because it is not all about me. I now really love the dog. Note we got a one year old from a foster situation, not a puppy. A puppy would have been a bridge to far.

I think all family members should be on board with getting a pet, especially a dog. It is a lot of work and will turn your house upside down for awhile.

That said, my dh wasn't big on the idea of a dog because of how much work it is. I wanted the dog. I got the dog. Now? You should hear the baby talk that goes on towards the dog when he thinks I can't hear. And against all odds, when I did basically everything with the dog, she decided he is her person. So it is a DH / dog love affair, lol. YMMV.

Yeah, I'm not really a fan of dogs either...

My god you are evil. How did men even date you? People who don't like dogs have issues.

We lucked out and our mutt (seriously, we did DNA and she's a total mutt but no Pitt) is super chill and doesn't destroy stuff. She does shed quite a bit though.

If you weren't a "dog person" and got a dog for your family, did you learn to love the dog?

Yikes. What kind of dog do you know that eats mulch? Grass yes but so do cats. Honestly, you do not deserve the love of a dog since you think so little of them.

There is zero reason to trash "pit bulls" you know an umbrella term for five different dogs. My fog does have American pit bull terrier plus other mixes and is my love bug.

Can you imagine if you said I adopted a kid and thank goodness no Italian in him!

Stop the hate

I agree. Op doesn't deserve the love of a dog.

You could have adopted an adult dog
