I hate dogs, kids and DH want one

One of my neighbors keeps putting his small dog out on his deck where it escapes. He really wants to get rid of it but it’s his wife’s child.

People here are mentioning training as if it’s easy to do yourself. Not true and finding a good trainer and sticking to it is hard. And expensive.

Do you plan on traveling much? Sometimes it’s impossible to find boarding. Do you have any idea how much that costs or that good honest dog sitters can be very hard to find? Do you understand how expensive vets are now and that many are overwhelmed with all the new dogs people got since Covid. I know a family who canceled a week long summer vacation because they couldn’t find someone to care for it.

It is too much work if you’re not hung ho about it.

I think Disney ruined dogs because they are always super well behaved. Everyone wants a Disney dog

If you don't like dogs, don't get a dog, because it's unfair to the dog.

But she isn't a dog.
Hence the term “dog-like cat.”

Tv dogs look so easy. Also no one should be shamed for admitting they’re in over their heads. The worst owners resent having the dog but won’t rehome it. Growing up we had two neighbors who just ignored their dogs and it was awful.

I don't like dogs (hate them, pretty much) and vowed I would never have one, yet I did cave and started with a puppy and it's now 2. It was a very tough time....getting a puppy was one of the larger challenges that we've faced as a family. 2 years in, I really do love this dog and he's definitely a part of our family. I do 95% of all the walking and general care and playing. But I signed up for this, so it's just become part of my daily routine. I still don't like dogs in general, but I do like our own. I have no plans to ever get another one, that's for sure.

I agree with the recommendations to get a dog past the puppy stage. I'm the one in our house who wanted a dog. I love him to bits, but the puppy stage has been so much harder than I ever expected. The training is a massive commitment, the house is a mess, and I never get to sleep in anymore.

I wouldn't give him up for the world, but it's been tough.

My friend has a shih-tzu and an Australian Shepard. The Shih-tzu is like a cat. I can handle him. He just wants to sit on your lap and hang out. Friend’s dd complained that he was too much like a cat so they got the Shepard.

That dog is huge and drools and is a pile of energy. Last week he ate a chipmunk in their yard and puked it all up the next day.

I think if you get a small lap dog like a shih-tzu you’ll be okay. I do not care for dogs and I like that one. Do not get a big drooler or a random dog. Figure out an appropriate breed.

I'm not telling anyone that they should be ashamed but,you should think really long and hard before you get any animal. I think people have very high expectations and are shocked when dogs act like dogs. For example, I was out and a lady had a sweet golden and the dog barked "hello" to a dog and she yanked it's neck with a prong collar. so she thinks she is a good dog owner but, she really isn't. Then you have the really awful ones who leave their dogs tethered to the backyard and don't feed them. ( mainly in the South) When the dogs attack they are blamed instead of the owners!

I hate that expression! Why compare cats to dogs and dogs to cats?

Don't get one. I had a dog and loved her to pieces. Then I got another one and he is reactive and difficult. Makes life hard. I still have at least 7-11 years left taking care of him.

I keep reading the title of this post as “I hate dogs, kids and DH” and feel for this poor poster who apparently hates everyone in her home.

Anyway, don’t get a dog, because you really might end up saying “I hate dogs, kids and DH…”

I don’t hate dogs but I am someone who doesn’t like spending money or stressing out over something that is preventable. Same reason I’m CFBC. My DH is like yours so I compromised by getting a fully-remote position instead going into work 3 days a week and because I’m home more and able to spend time with DH, I’ve been able to convince him he doesn’t need a dog.

I read somewhere, and I am not being sarcastic, I actually read this, that having a dog is a marker of an UMC family.

I like dogs depending on how you cook them

If you weren't a "dog person" and got a dog for your family, did you learn to love the dog?

Do you have a cat?
