NCSL merging with Suburban Friendship Rec League

I think you know what would happen. The travel parents would get angry, and the club would eventually lose players/teams/MONEY.

But you've got me thinking of something...: Rec teams vs lower tier travel teams as a travel team fundraiser.

Let's say rec team puts up $200 to play against a travel team.
Travel team keeps $200 to use toward whatever (like tournament registration fees).
Rec team plays for fun and bragging rights.

Our club has scrimmages. From what I've seen, top travel team win big and second or third teams really struggle against good rec teams.

What day of the weekend are most SFL games? My son wants me to sign him up, but he's also doing a weekend lacrosse clinic this fall. I want to make sure there is no conflict.
I guess it could change when NCSL takes over though.

Saturday at the moment. You can look at previous schedules online https://www.sflsoccer.org/

They are almost always on Saturdays. Like 95% of games. They could be pretty late in the day, or at 8 am.

You think rec team parents would pay a travel team $200 to play one game? LOL!

Oh we all know what would happen.

I saw a U16 division one SFL game playing before our younger NCSL game and there were some GOOD players.

When my kids played rec and did rec league all stars, they used to regularly scrimmage the lower level (B, C, D) travel teams to get ready for the tournament. After a few years, the travel teams started being 'busy" and they stopped scrimmaging. Why? Because the all star teams always beat them.

Virginia league only? That sucks for SOTH teams who played in SFL.

As kids get older a few things seem to happen. First, some kids who are good at travel soccer decide to drop it for another sport. A good number of those kids end up in SFL. Second, a lot of the really un-athletic kids whose parents make them play sports quit. The result is some SFL teams that are as good as travel teams, but are made up of kids who prefer lax, swim, bball... to soccer.

Many have shared a feeling that the better rec teams would easily beat the lower travel teams.

Honest question - why don't the kids on those rec teams switch to travel?

Considering the cost per game of a tourney, and that you're essentially creating a mini travel tourney, I do think it's reasonable. And, yes, I believe that in our area, you could find parents who would be willing share the cost of $200 to play a refereed game against a "superior" team to feed their own egos.

Time. Money. Priorities.

Some kids like being on a travel team and staying in a hotel with teammates a couple of times a year and hanging at tournaments. That the team isn't very good is irrelevant to that part of the experience

Anyone can be on a travel team. There's nothing special about signing up for one.

You actually have to be good at soccer to be on a good SFL team.

Nah, parents of kids on good rec teams don't really care that much. They know their good rec team could beat the pay-to-play travel teams. Its really not a big deal and no one wants to pay extra mony just to embarass some pitiful travel team. They just want to play other good rec teams, scrimmage, maybe do a tournament. No one cared about travel teams much at all.

My son has other non-sports activities and plays another sport, and doesn't have time for a two hour practice three times a week practice plus a game.
