Too bad they are separated. It would have been interesting to see what happened if the 3rd or 4th travel team in a club got crushed by their own rec team in league play
I think you know what would happen. The travel parents would get angry, and the club would eventually lose players/teams/MONEY. But you've got me thinking of something...: Rec teams vs lower tier travel teams as a travel team fundraiser. Let's say rec team puts up $200 to play against a travel team. Travel team keeps $200 to use toward whatever (like tournament registration fees). Rec team plays for fun and bragging rights.
Our club has scrimmages. From what I've seen, top travel team win big and second or third teams really struggle against good rec teams.
You think rec team parents would pay a travel team $200 to play one game? LOL!
Considering the cost per game of a tourney, and that you're essentially creating a mini travel tourney, I do think it's reasonable. And, yes, I believe that in our area, you could find parents who would be willing share the cost of $200 to play a refereed game against a "superior" team to feed their own egos.
Nah, parents of kids on good rec teams don't really care that much. They know their good rec team could beat the pay-to-play travel teams. Its really not a big deal and no one wants to pay extra mony just to embarass some pitiful travel team. They just want to play other good rec teams, scrimmage, maybe do a tournament. No one cared about travel teams much at all.
