U10 Tryouts - Arlington

My sons both tried out U10 and U13 for Arlington on Monday night. My impression was that the tryout to see if you will be invited to officially tryout with th team. My U13 son (did not do well and I don't expect him to get invited back)...my U10 did do well and was pulled aside by the coaches more than once -- anyone know the process or the timing on when I should hear something or if I should assume he also will not get invited to tryout at this point. We are holding off on accepting any other offers but time is getting tight.

My daughter tried out for the 13U and she had a pretty strong showing. She was told they would hear something in 1-3 days and we have not heard anything either. I'm actually getting concerned they're going to schedule a callback over the weekend which we can't do. Hope that isn't the case.

Last year we heard our no within a few days. Then, a few weeks later a few players were invited to some practices (from what hear, some players left that they were not anticipating and they needed additional players). Typically Arlington fills the very skilled players on top teams and the rest of the kids fill from the bottom up (meaning your kid may make the bottom team but you feel they are better than that). Then over time, those players move up in the organization if they see improvement. Good luck!

OP, any word? We are now assuming we didn’t get a call back. It’s strange because my husband said my daughter did great and he’s not one to give compliments

I still haven't heard anything so I am assuming no....but weird that nothing has still come to fruition. Again, he was pulled aside by a coach...talked to and put into a different drill. No other kid on his friend got that at U10...at U13 no one was really looked at seriously and I am ok with that.

same experience for our daughter. she was pulled out and put on highest performance field. Please post if you get an update and I'll do the same. I wonder if they need more time to determine if current players are returning and how many spots they actually have. My daughter is a defensive player, so I think she's at a slight disadvantage considering there are fewer positions available.

So for what it is worth--- I can add a piece of info. My U10 9 year old tried out on Monday and I honestly thought he didn't do all that great. He's 9 and just started living and breathing soccer in November after the World Cup. He's a super quick learner, passionate, and on the ball. He's playing rec where he is actually really good! But Monday night...... I could see he really needed some coaching and training with his footwork. I told him he did great and we would see what what they said. Honestly, I expected nothing. We got home at like 7:30 and by 9:30, there was an email asking him to come back on Tuesday for a callback. We went on Tuesday and there were maybe 15 kids from Monday night. They were split into two groups and they played the travel kids during their practice. He did better on Tuesday.....still could see he was never really coached but he was aggressive and really tried. Today is Thursday and haven't heard anything yet..... not even sure what Tuesday was all about. The kids they pulled seemed to be somewhere between moderately good and "advanced" rec level. Maybe they were looking for more black and gold players....or adding a team below gold? We do not mind AT ALL being a lower team b/c he has to learn somewhere. If he ends up being good, I would guess they'd move him up. Anyway--- just another layer....hasn't been totally crickets for all of us at Monday's tryouts.

Oh and since some of us have multiple kids doing tryouts, I'll just ask! My daughter did the three day U9 girl tryouts. She is only 6 and in kindergarten but she was born within the cut-off date. Anyway--- unlike my son, she is a natural who looks like she has been coached. She kicked butt.....I could not believe. Pretty sure she was the youngest and the smallest out there but for those three days, they moved her around probably 10 or more times. She stayed mostly with bigger older girls (which I thought was interesting) and they knew her name on the second and third days when she checked in without her saying it. The last tryout was Sunday and we have not heard anything.....has anyone else or heard of anyone getting U9 girl offers? I really thought she was amazing and didn't question once whether she could hold her own....but she is 6 and in kindergarten and has time I guess to do travel. But she can't do ADP b/c she isn't old enough and she dominates her rec team. Any info for U9 out there?

I have a daughter on one of the U12 teams (so moving to U13 next year). There are several girls who were invited to their practice this week to tryout. I don't know whether different girls will be invited for next week. I don't expect (but can never say for sure) that there will be callbacks over the weekend, because the teams don't practice then.

I'm just curious -why doesn't Arlington structure the soccer similar to Mclean. For example, why are returning players guaranteed a spot and newcomers who are potentially better than existing players left with fewer options. Seems paradoxical and not great for the organization to keep mediocre existing players over new stronger players. We just moved to the area, and I've seen a few girls on the lower teams and my daughter who is defense appears much stronger. Wish I know how challenging this process is because I would have insisted, she try out for a different league.

Existing players were told that roster spots are not guaranteed.

Quoting isn't working right now for some reason, but replying about 9U offers.

Just sharing that we had a very similar experience at the three tryouts for our son with 9U boys. By the end of Sunday, he was playing on the field with the returning players. (We know a returning player.)

We haven't heard anything either from Arlington, other than the email on Monday saying by EOW.

We actually got an offer this morning from another club, and I emailed Arlington this morning to ask when they'd send notifications. No response yet. (Our friend with the returning player hasn't gotten an offer yet either.)

Hopefully tomorrow?

Not sure if this answers all, but here's the relevant paragraph from an email ASA sent last month about the timeline of final decisions/rosters for next season:

•2014 (U10), 2011 (U13), 2010 (U14): We anticipate that the players in these age groups will receive email notification of their status during the week of May 15.

For the parents with U10 and U13 kids trying out, if they're being considered, I would think they are being asked to practice with the ASA teams this week and next. Even if they're not, I've seen players get slated without going through the team practice sessions. Every year seems to be a bit different, but probably depends on a bunch of factors -- personalities of current coaches, quality of players (both returning and new), and players leaving for other clubs.

So we got the girl's U9 email--- daughter didn't make it. Like I said above, she is only 6 and in kindergarten but for some reason the tryouts were open to those born in 2016. I thought she did so well....but we will continue with rec for now. She can't tryout for ADP b/c she doesn't make birthday cutoff. Still don't get why she was allowed travel tryout but not ADP.....gonna be a sad convo to have after school today
