It's very possible that I misunderstand the technology but I get "free" streaming with Amazon Prime that won't play on my iPad. Does that mean no tablet will be able to stream from Amazon Prime?

The technical answer is fairly complex and this is likely more of a business decision than a technical one anyways. But, in short, Amazon should be able to make its streaming service available for iOS and Android devices fairly easily. However, it it chooses to use streaming to drive Kindle purchases, it may choose not to. My own guess is that Flash will soon be dead, both on the desktop and on mobile. So, Amazon will probably have non-Flash streaming. But, it still might restrict that to Kindles.

I'm wondering if our second tablet shouldn't be one that can play things in Flash. I do find that annoying about the iPad. Lots of DS's little videos and his online guided reading programs require Flash.

Adobe has dropped mobile Flash. Apple won that one. Going forward, websites will migrate away from Flash because mobile users -- except in very limited cases -- won't be able to use Flash.

Thanks for all the public outcry. The government has no right to FORCE religious organizations to offer something that it deems immoral. All the atheists on DCUM can now go back to laughing at people of faith. And as usual the President of no morals or principals is shown as an emperor with no clothes.

I would wait until you hear what he has to say.

Jeff, are we to edit everything we say now for fear you're going to slap us on the wrist? I've seen much, much crueler things said about people (including other professionals!) on threads. And you're going to come down on me for a sarcastic little snip?

Yes, I am specifically targeting you. Consider it like winning the lottery. Out of the thousands of possibilities, you are the lucky winner.

Please don't made accusations that you have no way of supporting. You also happen to be wrong.
I was thinking about the cost of birth control versus the cost of giving birth and I had an epiphany. Who bears this cost? Individuals, government, or others? In the case of employer-provided health insurance, it is most certainly the insurance company (at least for birth if birth control is not covered). So, who then has an interest in seeing birth control covered? The insurance companies. In any contest between Catholic bishops and the insurance industry, it will a blow-out for the insurance industry where the Obama administration is concerned. That's not even a fair contest. Stalin once famously asked, "How many divisions does the Pope have?" The Obama equivalent would be, "How many bundled contributions can the Bishops make?" This is case closed as far as I'm concerned. Compromise or no compromise, birth control will be covered one way or another.

Regarding the labor conditions in China, see this article:

http://blog.laptopmag.com/labor-activist-apple-best-at-auditing-factories-still-not-doing-enough

"Labor Activist Li Qiang wants you to know that the iPhone 4 in his pocket is not an endorsement of Apple’s policies, just an acknowledgement that the company is doing a better job of monitoring factory conditions than its peers."

"“Although I know that the iPhone 4 is made at sweat shop factories in China, I still think that this is the only choice, because Apple is actually one of the best. Actually before I made a decision, I compared Apple with other cell phone companies, such as Nokia,” he said through a translator. “And the conditions in those factories are worse than the ones of Apple.”"

There is a good bet that any non-Apple tablet is manufactured under worse conditions than an iPad.

Screen rez is pretty much my only pet peeve. I feel dumb for getting my name engraved on the back, which I supposed make re-sale almost impossible...

Am I crazy or would anyone else upgrade when you already have a 2?

You must be new to this sort of thing. You don't "upgrade". You very generously purchase a second iPad so that you can pass on your current iPad to another family member. Whether another family member wants it or not is only of secondary importance.

Editing to add, it is due to just this sort of generosity on my part that we have enough hand-me-down iPhones that even our dog has her own.

Uh, oh. Doggy Death Panels?
I didn't read the entire article, but the People's Mujahedin has a large camp in Iraq that had been under the protection of US forces. Now that those forces have withdrawn, the group is in a precarious position given the Iraqi government's friendship with Iran. There are a number of US officials and/or former officials who have openly supported the organization. This is just another example of the hypocrisy surrounding the entire "terrorism" issue. If Americans supported Hamas or Hizballah in the same manner that some Americans support the People's Mujahedin, they would be arrested. There is simply no equal protection under the law in this case. Since you can be labeled a "terrorist" for basically anything these days, the word has lost all meaning.
I'm just waiting for some Native Americans to open a restaurant in DC selling peyote brownies. Then, they can claim their religious rights are being violated if the government tries to interfere.
Sorry, no. It doesn't work with the type of forum we use.
That is a strange error message to receive because DCUM is not a HTTPS site. Therefore, we don't have a digital certificate. I don't know what other kind of "security certificate" to which the message might be referring.

Is anybody else seeing this type of error message?

A good comparison for people who owned cars during the 1990s is the Honda Accord versus a BMW. The BMW might be a better car on paper. But it's also a huge hassle to keep running at top performance. The Honda is not as flashy, but it always starts, always runs, and gets you there on time.

I have to quibble with this. The iPhone is more like a Lexus or Infiniti and Android is more like the Volkswagon Group's Jetta platform which is also used in the Beetle, Golf, Audi TT, Audit A3, a couple of SEATs, and a few Skodas. All of those cars are the same underneath, but are not compatible with each other. All currently shipping iPhone models run the same iOS version and all share the same interface. Android devices run any number of OS versions, only something like 1% of which are the latest version, and most come with a carrier-supplied interface.
