We have them in a highly sought after DC charter today (which we love on one hand bc of language immersion and are just "meh" about it on the other because aside from the language component, we just are not sure that it stimulates our kids academically (DC does not allow for pullouts or TAG programs.

I am considering a move from DC to the burbs a) for safety and b) for more space with a lower cost of living. I absolutely do my want to sacrifice what I think are very good programs in the later years such as Banneker and Walls if it's not really worth it, but some parents seem to love their PG schools. Right now elementary and middle are my most pressing concerns. My kids would be adjusting to a lot - potentially no immersion, a much bigger environment and, from what I can tell, significantly less diversity. I am looking for feedback to include: 1) best areas within PG to look 2) what diversity looks like in these areas and 3) how people manage a commute plus picking kids up from school, extracurriculars, etc. at these schools.

Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated!

I am in the very same boat! Would love to PM to discuss more. My username is Yomo if you wouldnt mind.

OP here (slowly picking up the forum slang) - I am a new member and still a bit awkward with this forum but yes, I have been searching and reading. A tad overwhelming! I hope to hear more recent experiences too.

Re Wilson -- if your child isn't currently at Hardy, Deal or Oyster Adams, or you live in the boundary -- you won't get in. It's been years since anyone was accepted OOB.

For a talented student, financial assistance is available. Search on the private school board where this question comes up a lot.

Thank you.
My DD #1 was 8 and 10 years old when I had my second and third babies. With the last one, I left my job because it was crazy finding affordable care for the last two. So, I became a SAHP when my DD started 5th grade middle school. While not intentional, I am gad I am home so I have more time to be on her toes all the times regarding homework, studying, etc while taking care of the other two kids. But I am not sure I would do the same if it was just DD at home...I can imagine a PT job being doable if you want to have more time with your middle schooler.
My kid is in a charter middle school now but I am putting high school right on my front radar. Any personal experience with one of the following?

SWWS
Banneker
Basis
Latin
KIPP DC College Prep
Dunbar
Cardozo
Eastern
Ellington
Wilson
Woodson

Any private HS that offers generous financial assistance?

Many thanks for your input.
Anyone with a child at KIPP DC Will Academy (middle school) on this board can share their experience and thoughts? What is their curriculum like? I see that their days are longer - 8am to 4pm. Considering this school as one of our options for 7th grade next year.
My child is at Basis DC, and we are coming to the realization that the school is not a good fit for their learning style. We are now exploring other middle school options, and we came across KIPP DC Will Academy. Curious if anyone here has experienced both schools and can share thoughts about each?

Basis DC is a rigorous STEM school and usually means 2-3 hours of homework. We are wondering if KIPP’s rigor is the same or the students can breathe a bit more?
