The Auburn School is excited to announce new full scholarship opportunities. Auburn Leaf Scholarships will provide over $500,000 in funding for new students. The Auburn Leaf Scholarships provide full tuition remission for students to attend for the duration of their time at Auburn (up to nine years). Auburn will offer one Auburn Leaf Scholarship per year to new students enrolling at Auburn for the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years.

The application deadline is September 1, 2010 for 2010-2011 and February 1, 2011 for 2011-2012. Complete information on the scholarship program is also available on the website (www.theauburnschool.org).

Scholarships are available for either the Herndon, VA or Silver Spring, MD campuses. Auburn seeks to be a national model school for students with challenges in social skills, communication, pragmatic language and organization, such as Asperger’s syndrome.
A lot of the private schools for special needs offer (substantial) financial aide.

I wouldn't rule them out of you think it might help. The Auburn School sounds like a good fit for you daughter (they serve bright, quirky kids with social skills deficits) Disclaimer--I work there so I know!

McLean might also be a good option, as a PP said.

I don't know as much about Newton, but you might look into them as well.

Good luck!

Oh, and one more thing--JSSA (Jewish Social Services Agency) might be a good local resource for social skills classes!
Hi everyone,

I know this particular forum doesn't get a lot of traffic, but I did want to respond here because I saw the thread about social skills programs and I know there is a crucial need for this in our area.

I am a former FCPS special education teacher now working as a consultant for The Auburn School (www.theauburnschool.org). The Auburn School will open in Northern Virginia in September of 2008.

I've included a little bit about the school below, and you can find more information at the school's website: www.theauburnschool.org.

In a nutshell, The Auburn School will offer a stimulating educational program for intellectually engaged students with challenges in the
areas of communication and socialization, such as Asperger's syndrome and NVLD. Auburn will support development of both social and
academic skills in a small, nurturing school environment.

Students at The Auburn School will be bright students with average to above-average cognitive abilities. They will also have differences
and difficulties in the areas of communication, socialization, language, and organization. Auburn serves students with challenges in
these areas, such as social awkwardness; restricted or unusually intense interests or behavior; atypical speech and language usage;
difficulty sustaining conversations or friendships; and trouble successfully interacting in large group settings.

More information is available on the website(www.theauburnschool.org), including tuition rates and information regarding the financial aid
process. Additionally, there are several upcoming parent information sessions being held in April.

I hope this information is helpful to someone.
