Due to a recent program expansion, Merritt Academy in Fairfax, Virginia still has a limited number of spaces in the pre-K program for the 2014-15 school year!

Designed to engage and challenge each child at his or her own level, Merritt Academy's preschool program understands that children are filled with natural curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. Merritt’s Preschool program fosters this enthusiasm through imaginative play, creative projects and academic activities that engage and stimulate children’s intellectual growth. Typical daily activities include art projects, language development/writing exercises, imaginative play and cognitive explorations. On a weekly basis, students engage in a number of specialty activities including foreign language (Spanish and French), library, computers, music and P.E., led by specialists.

Our excellent student-to-teacher ratio allow for individual and small-group instruction to take place, while children are able to practice an increasing level of independence in decision-making, self-advocacy and problem-solving skills. Each classroom is lead by a team of educators who work hand-in-hand to ensure that students are challenged and engaged in their learning environment. The curriculum is theme-based, which captures imagination and exposes children to a variety of topics, from Celebrations around the World to Amazing Authors to My Five Senses.

Merritt Academy's Pre-K students also take off-campus field trips offer additional opportunities to bring lessons to life.

Door to door bus transportation may be available- please inquire for details.

To PP-
My name is Amy, and I'm the Director of Admissions at Merritt Academy. My opinion is that a "daycare" provides child supervision and ensures that children's basic needs (food, clothing, diapering) are met while parents are away. They may or may not incorporate other activities, and generally do not ascribe to a larger program, curriculum or teaching philosophy (Traditional vs. Montessori vs. Progressive, etc.)

I consider Merritt Academy's program to be a full-time preschool as opposed to a daycare. The distinction, in my opinion, comes down to the caliber of teachers/caregivers that work directly with the children (are they degreed, is teaching preschool their career choice, or just a job?), whether or not the center ascribes to a particular program or curriculum.

For instance, each preschool class (infants up to pre-K) are lead by teachers with specialized degrees in Early Childhood Education (BA in ECE) or Child Development (CDA). Merritt Academy's Infant, Toddler and K2 programs are based on the Whole Child Concept ABCs of Developmental Milestones- which can be viewed here: http://www.pbs.org/wholechild/abc/index.htmlTeachers create weekly lesson plans with flexibility and differentiation in mind, so that each child is able to meet the various milestones at his or her own pace. Our K3 and K4 programs are more academic, and take content from our school curriculum that go through our upper grades.

Since we incorporate a "big picture" approach to each individual child's development and progress, and our teachers are educators (as opposed to simply "caregivers"), our program does not fit my personal definition of a daycare.
Anonymous wrote:I feel like I have read the reviews for just about every day care center in my area! We like JCC off Little River and plan to get on the waitlist there (a year). We need one or two other good day care centers to give ourselves more than one option.

Any suggestions? We didn't care for A Child's Place when we visited and Merritt Academy didn't return our phone inquiry (have also heard they have a long waitlist).

Dear Poster,
I want to sincerely apologize for not returning your phone inquiry. I make a concerted effort to respond promptly to every inquiry I receive, whether phone or email, however, I admit that occasionally I lose track of a message and it goes unreturned. I would love to provide you with additional information and invite you to tour our school. Please give me one more chance!

Sincerely,

Amy Pernick,
Director of Admissions for Merritt Academy
