| I can't believe the numbers of different sleeping's aids medications out there for kids. MY DS has sleeping problems sometimes so he take Kids zzqull but can't believe so many teens have the same issue. |
|
We give DS, 9, about 2mg of melatonin each night. DD, 12, sometimes takes it.
Our pediatrician is on board. |
My 13 year old gets 5 mg of melatonin almost every night. Her pediatrician and psych are on board. |
And before DCUM gets their panties in a twist, the dose is appropriate for her weight. She is off the growth charts and taller/heavier than the average adult woman. |
| My 13 yr old that takes daily meds for anxiety takes Magnesium daily at night per his doctor. He will also take 3mg of melatonin once in a while usually in situations where the schedule is different than normal in the evening or if he is away from home for the night. |
You can't overdose on Melatonin. The only issue is your body doesn't absorb more than a certain amount so iys wasted if its too much. |
| Melatonin and sometimes magnesium. DS in particular is turning into an insomniac because I have cancer and he’s anxious about everything already (pandemic, police brutality, looming eviction wave, climate crisis…) |
Zquill can cause liver injury whereas Melatonin does not and can actually decrease some liver problems. |

I'm thinking about jumping onto the Melatonin band wagon but have some lingering doubts.
Can you get hooked on Melatonin? I mean I know it's not addictive but does your body grow a reliance on it to go to sleep? What happens when your kid doesn't take Melatonin, are they able to go to sleep on their own at a reasonable hour? I guess my fear is that by dosing my kid with Melatonin each night, they will grow dependent on that to go to sleep -- maybe not a physical dependence but a mental dependence if that makes sense. Then, they will graduate to Ambien or something stronger later on in life. Am I crazy to think that? |
| My anxiety disorder kid with allergies takes Benadryl. Before covid, he just took Benadryl when symptoms were really bad, but now he takes it every night because even milder symptoms are a problem. |
I give my kids Melatonin but they have adhd. What we tried first was lots of excercise followed by sleep hygiene..which basically means a strict bed time routine. It was only after those things that we went to Melatonin. There are some articles that say if you should take a break from it once in a while or the body will stop producing it naturally. I'm not sure if that's accurate. We have given it many many months in a row and they are still able to fall asleep on their own when we don't. As for a psychological dependency... I'm not sure if Melatonin is a gateway supplement? I mean why wouldn't they just keep taking Melatonin if they think they need it? |
I was told emphatically NOT to give my child benadryl as a sleep aid because later studies show it crosses the blood barrier in the brain. |
| My college age son who is in medical school takes melatonin. Unfortunately he has a long road ahead of him. |
My teen takes 10mg per doctor orders as lower doses do not work for him/her. Hoping return to in person school and sports will help … |
| Mine takes melatonin if a good night's sleep is critical and there is a reason to be anxious. When my teen has a few nights of bad sleep, we usually return to melatonin, but only for 3-4 days. That seems to reset everything. Melatonin is a game changer. I take it with me on trips, too. |
