What happened to fat free dressings ?

Anonymous
I can’t figure out why many grocery stores and restaurants stopped carrying fat-free and have greatly reduced the used of light dressing.

While I know there are many concerns for fat free condiments, I can’t figure out why they have disappeared almost over night.

Has anyone else noticed this?

It’s part of the overall trend in how our eating has changed. The low fat and fat free thing was big in the 90s, now people care more about products being natural/less processed/local/etc.

Also, that stuff didn’t taste very good.

I don't buy dressings--if I want ranch, I'll whip it up at home, otherwise I'll use oil and vinegar. Fat Free condiments are loaded with sugar and overall contributed to the obesity epidemic. People figured this out--when things don't sell, stores don't carry them. Supply and demand. Plus they taste like crap.

Bolthouse Farms dressings are in all the groceries.

There is a bunch of naturally lower calorie dressings now. I think they have taken the place of no fat. I still find reduced fat dressings.

Because they were full of salt?
Like the fat free cereals are full of sugar?

It's stupid.

You absorb more vitamins from salads if you use fat dressings, because they're non-water soluble molecules. They often required tons of sugar for them to be palatable, and we now know that too much sugar is just as bad if not worse for you than too much fats.

They are just sugar. Complete junk. Use oil and vinegar… bottled salad dressing is like a sad vestige of the 80s.

It's this. They were full of salt, sugar, and tons of artificial gross fillers. Our obesity epidemic is not driven by people using real oil on their salads and the grocery selection reflects that. Lower calorie is fine whether you buy it or make it at home, but totally fat free is crap. Like instead of having parmesan you use fat free cheese wiz in a can. Priorities off.

This, and with carbs being the new bad guy in town it stopped appealing to those who chose it for “health” reasons.

People caught on that loads of sugar replaced the fat and stopped buying them and asking for them.
