Runners: was this week especially horrible, or am I just getting slower?

Anonymous
I was a good 30-40 seconds per mile slower on my training runs per week and it felt brutal. I’m trying to ramp up my training to run some 5Ks and 10Ks after taking a year away from racing. I’m a pretty serious runner. Heat and humidity usually does a number on me but this week I could barely even manage it. I’m the type of runner who can usually fly by at a pretty fast pace under good conditions (my best race ever was when it was 38 degrees out) but this week I’ve found my heart rate at least 15 bpm faster and my running 40s slower per mile than a normal pace and it felt more difficult. Please tell me it was the humidity and not me getting old and slow.

It was awful this week. Like running through hot dog breath.

LOL! Such an accurate and appropriate visual.

The humidity is terrible for running. The running mantra I go by: "Tolerate June-August. Run like hell September-May."

So glad you asked. I am really struggling and have also been wondering if it's just me. I'll hang in there if you will!

Same - My run this morning at 6:30am was 30 second slower than normal. It was just gross out. Didn't help that I lifted for the first time in AGES on Friday and I am still sore.

It’s really really hot out. Like not worth going for a run this week.

1. It was brutal
2. what time of the month is it? The week before my period I'm much slower and the run is SO HARD
3. You could be getting slower, but it's doubtful it would be that dramatic.

I just saw a remark on a semiprofessional runner's Instagram ... he called humidity "the poor man's altitude training." Ha! That kind of makes me feel better ... if we can slog through another couple of weeks, maybe it will feel fun again!

You won't have to wait that long. Next week will be in the 80s and the mornings will be in the 60s. AHHHH.

I felt so bad I was worried I had COVID. Nope.. just terrible humidity.

When I saw that the dew point at 6am was already above 70, I decided not to run. I'm grumpy about it but that's better than feeling sick.
