About to jump into the market for an after school sitter for my DS who is 7. He'll be in school until 3, but no after care this year. About to post on Care or Quad jobs, but have no idea what going rate is. $20? $25? $30? I'm sure everyone will be looking to hire sitters now that school is back but after care is sketchy. |
How many hours a day? |
At least $30 |
OP here -- 3 hours per day (3-6pm). |
We paid $35/hr. a few years ago. Perhaps overbid, but we wanted a dependable adult for a few years, with car, experience, etc. for a part-time position, who was also seeking a part-time position. We "guaranteed" 12 hours per week, 3:30-6:30 4 days, whether we needed it or not. |
We had no luck keeping anyone for $25 an hour last year. As much as it hurts, I’d up the hourly. |
One million dollars. But seriously OP, this is a job everyone wants to hire for and almost no one wants to take. You definitely need to pay $100/3 hrs at a minimum unless you just miraculously find a teen who wants this, can do it, doesn't know any better and will take like $20-25/hr. |
This is why people get Au Pairs.

That is the absolute most difficult time to staff, especially for 5 days a week. 15 hours a week, it completely disrupts the middle of your day and interferes with any other potential part time supplemental job for both 1st and 2nd shifts. $30 if you want someone to reliably show up. |
Another reason to get on SACC waitlist. |
I know it's not ideal, but consider listing it as two positions: Mon/Wed/Fri from 3-6 and Tues/Thurs from 3-6. Or advertise for part-time childcare 3 days/week and let the poster determine the days she can do. If you break it up into two jobs, you open up the field of candidates to students or adults with varying schedules.
Very few people can or want to work five days a week for those limited hours. |
I found someone for $16 for two kids - eight and six. No driving is it a high school kid. |
OP we pay someone $40 per day for coverage for our 8yo. She starts at 345 and I’m home by 630 at the absolute latest. Sometimes she drops DD at her sport at 530 or 6 and we pay the same. During the school year a friend who is a sahm mom does it. Kids are sane age and sane school. In the summer we find someone else, it’s never been a problem. We only need two days a week if this and the days rotate. |
$40 a DAY for 3 hours? LOL. Good luck if you try this, OP. ![]() |
+1. And not because the sitter deserves it or because it’s a hard job. Your asking for the hours in the greatest demand and if you try to pay less the sitter will leave the second anyone offers her more. Sucks but you need someone dependable and who won’t flake at a moment’s notice. |
