Would you be mad? Babysitter question

Anonymous
I come back, and the house is a toy mess, and my 1-year-old has a dirty diaper. The babysitter is a 24-year-old male.

Yes, but I you’d never hide a 24 year old male. So it’s on you.

Yes but the problem is the management (you)

LOL Who hires a 24-year-old male and assumes they're going to clean up your house?

OP here. If I need to explain these things to a 24-year-old, it doesn't seem worth it. Cleaning up and checking diapers right before you leave are standard duties. How does he not know this? He came with three references. Ugh. I don't want to look for another babysitter.

Well you're going to have to if you're not ok with his level of service

For how long is this arrangement intended?

How long was he sitting? A lot of parents wouldn’t want a man hired to babysit to change a diaper unless they were there more than 3 hours.

Also, you said the house is a “toy” mess, not a mess in general. If you returned in the middle of the day, and he came in to toys out, he likely thought that the toys should be out and you’d clean up later.

were the toys all neatly put away when he first arrived?

I wouldn’t care about the mess but the dirty diaper would definitely make that the last time he babysat for me.

Don’t be angry; just don’t hire him again.

Nanny here. I'd have a problem with the full diaper of course.

But not with the mess ... because that means they played.

I'd give him another chance, maybe he's still learning.

Assuming dirty means not just wet...it should have been changed right away. No one wants their kid to sit in a dirty diaper.

Remember OP that Males do not mature as quickly as Females.

I would switch to a F caregiver.

NP. I am not sure it’s so much the male part as the 24yo part. We have a sitter who is 26 and so amazing with my kids, but cleaning up is just not something she thinks about. When she feeds the kids, she puts the dishes in the sink if I am lucky, but most of the time just leaves them on the table. The toys are out and well played with too. I feel like that just what you get from a younger, very part time sitter.

You could absolutely tell him it would be great if he can help put some things away as they play but it may or may not happen.

I have made the diaper mistake once, and I am 26 years old and female. I would probably only hire a male if he were queer and very into nanny life tbh. I always leave the house clean as a babysitter or nanny.
