Sorry to be a cynic but you seriously think DC can just throw this together in two weeks?? They didn’t do that so well last time, did they.

This takes resources away from other students.

Just homeschool.

I would support a petition to allow DCPS student currently enrolled at OOB schools to keep their spot if they homeschool this year. I don’t think you could do that at charters.

But yeah, there has always been a virtual school option, it’s called homeschool, it is superior to what DCPS offered last year. If you are stressed about Covid, just do it! I would support that choice.

I would have supported a centralized virtual option for anyone who wants it, but um yeah people there are two weeks until school starts. DCPS is not the most nimble organization….

DCPS is offering a virtual option. https://dcpsreopenstrong.com/sy21-22/virtual/

Friendship is fully enrolled. DCPS’s “virtual option” requires a physician’s sign off with an incredibly high bar - that the child is all caps REQUIRED to be in virtual school.

So no. There are no virtual options.

I can’t believe parents are so put off that people would want a virtual option when there’s currently a six page thread on this same site filled with people who are refusing to opt in for asymptomatic testing.

Whoever wrote the petition needed a good editor. Geez. It wasn't well structured or convincing and will therefore be very easy to dismiss.

There wasn't even a clear ask. What do you want? Centralized virtual that you can attend for a year, a term, what?

Did you also miss the 40 plus page on this exact topic?

except spoiled parents would somehow use the centralized virtual option to disrupt IPL, mark my words. That’s what they did last year, and that’s what they’ll do this year. they would claim that it wasn’t fair that IPL had small class sizes, and would try to take teachers from IPL.

Not unhappy with the idea of a virtual option, although we personally wouldn't use it. But such a vague petition 2 weeks before the school year starts seems unlikely to get anyone anywhere.

Why not rework the petition to request 1) lowering the bar for entrance to DCPS virtual academy (maybe physicians can sign off on virtual based on either the child's health or the health of a family member in the same house) and 2) extending the deadline for choosing virtual. Get specific with what you mean by "virtual option" and why the current virtual options aren't working for some families.

Agree it’s poorly drafted. I would support expanding the centralized virtual option with no burden placed on individual schools to staff it. Also would agree to a right of return to their current school for students choosing virtual this year and no burden on individual schools to fill those seats this year.

I would not support individual schools being required to provide any virtual schooling, particularly “simulcasting.”
