Just curious. I never did this and it never occurred to me to do it. I now wear a real wedding ring. My experience is that creepy dudes will hit on you whether you have a ring on or not. I have mixed/negative feelings about pretending to be married to keep people away, because I think you should be able to just say "No, I'm not interested." But I am also aware some men don't take that well.
Anyway, what do you think of this? Is this a real thing women do? |
| I had one in my twenties - wore it to job interviews and sometimes when I wanted to be left alone. |
| No. My cousin did though. She lived in NYC at the time. |

I did when I was younger (and obviously still single). It doesn’t work. It deters the decent guys, and does nothing to stop the advances of creeps. So you get nothing BUT creeps hitting on you, usually married ones. They’re already cheating, so they figure if they see you out somewhere in a heavily single crowd, that you’re also down for cheating too.
Now that I’m older and now solidly in the cougar column, I leave my rings off so younger guys will hit on me. Sigh… I’m gonna cry when I hit 40. |
| Guys still hit on me even with the rings. Men are men. They are going to take a shot. |
| Yes, when working retail. Cut the hitting on by old guys in half. |
|
Serious question for the guys- do you even pay attention to rings and what finger they are on?
|
| I did them a married older dude told me it wouldn’t work because some men prefer married women. |
| Yes, when traveling. |
| I’ve been hit on in front of my husband. Creeps are gonna creep. |
| I haven't but when I was in high school, my friend did, at times. She was 17-18 but extremely "put together," a classy dresser, didn't look like a teen girl. She was just mature in how she presented herself. She also had worked since the minute she was old enough to get a work permit, so she unfortunately was all too aware of much older men she encountered at jobs assuming she was older and hitting on her hard. She had a ring with a stone that she wore a lot and she would shift it to her left ring finger and turn it around so it appeared to be just a band. She said she did think it helped sometimes. Customers would start to chat her up, then glance at her hand and cool it. Yeah, some guys persisted but not all. She said she would find ways to be sure they saw her hand. I always was sad that she had to put up with so much of that crap. Super hard worker, saving for college for years because her parents didn't want to pay to send her, and still having to endure so much nonsense. |

Yes I wear a fake wedding ring everyday at work. I’m an RN on a cardiac unit. I’ve developed a strong dislike of men 40-90 yrs old. They are uniformly an unpleasant audacious bunch, and even worse when sick. The ring helps keep them at bay. I am nothing special but being taken care of seems to trigger bad behavior. They misunderstand me doing my job as me personally caring about them. I do wish them
good health and well being, but that’s it. |
What did your H do? How’d he handle that? |

I know a few younger guys that have a fake wedding ring they wear to bars because more women hit on them when they see the ring!!
Good lord. I'm horrified by my gender, I thought we were better than the men. |
+1,000 When has a ring ever stopped anyone. Sigh. It's a sad state of affairs. And I'm calling out BOTH genders! There are women that do the same damn thing. |
