The Italian should have won gold, not Jade (floor exercise)

Jade was fine, but there was nothing graceful or impressive in her routine. Very meh.

The Italian was flawless and graceful. Her performance was mesmerizing. And, she’s 30.

Her routine was not as difficult.

What are your credentials as a judge, OP?

Oh, and I'm 48. So does that mean all I have to do is roll around for the gold?

+1. No one asked you OP. Because you’re not an expert or renowned in the sport.

I love Vanessa Ferrari and I'm so pleased that she finally got her medal (nothing worse than 2 4ths in a row). That said, her tumbling form is not as good as Jade's and her tumbling is not as hard as Jade's. Her presentation is *much* better, her dance form is typically better -- though Jade hit her positions sufficiently in the final to get full credit (why her D score was +.1 over prelims) -- and her landings were slightly better on 2 of 4 passes (.1 differences) and slightly worse on 1 (.1 difference). All that said, she had to make up .4 in E when her tumbling form is not as clean... with only .1 in landing difference, it wasn't going to happen. I hope Jade learns to emote if she sticks with elite -- she could learn so much from Vany, Gelya and the Gadirovas' performance ability -- but tumbling is still the most important thing in FX and her tumbling was both harder and cleaner.

The current way that gymnastics is judged actually discourages athletes from performing dance moves or linking moves that look more graceful. If you are remembering routines from 20 or 30 years ago when the code of points favored those things, I can see how you would think this. But, modern athletes construct their routines based on the current scoring system. That is what Jade Carey did.

Degree of difficulty matters. And execution. It wasn't flawless. And even it was to your eyes, the judges are trained to pick up little mistakes: feet/legs not tight together, not completing elements, wobbles in execution.

Jade did great. Stop trying to belittle her success.

Good analysis. Ferrari has been around forever it seems like! I actually found it kind of creepy in team finals when Simone faltered on vault with Vanessa's "Time to Say Goodbye" playing in the background.

Agree with this. Jade deserved the win, based on how gymnastics is scored and technicals. But I also get what OP is saying. Women’s gymnastics has gone away from the dance, grace, artistry elements. Women’s gymnastics is looking more gender neutral, like a less powerful version of men’s gymnastics. A lot more is expected out of the women athletically now, but the trade off is it isn’t as enjoyable to watch. For me at least. I prefer the older style. But new times. That is ok.

Some people like ballet. To each their own. But this wasn't a ballet competition. Judge it by the rules that govern the event.

Hysterical.

This isn’t the gymnastics of Nadia anymore. You have to hit the difficulty scores.

Yes, I get that.

It’s a shame because Jade seemed stilted while Ferrari was powerfully graceful.

I thought the performance by the Italian was gorgeous as well. The ROC women were beautiful tumblers as well in the team final. Stunning to watch.

I feel like Jade is the Tonya Harding of gymnastics (without the criminal scheme): power over grace, a little rough around the edges, outsider.
