Uh...this is not normal.

Yes, it is. Only difference is kids are masked. They should always have been sent home if sick.

except often they aren't masked in fact one of my kid hates the fact that one kid who sits next to him takes off his mask during every single class multiple times

And cloth masks suck anyway, which is what most kids are wearing.

My kids cloth mask is 4 ply with adjustable bands and a changeable filter. #NotAllClothMasks

Yes even yours. We demand science yet don’t follow it. If you want better protection your kid needs a Niosh n95 or at the very least kn95 but parents would do that because Larlo doesn’t like it.

A cloth mask with a nonwoven filter is fine as long as it fits well. Look at some of the studies.

I peer reviewed several and work in a lab. I know it well. Good luck to you.

I work in a lab doesn't say very much. Plenty of morons work in a lab.

In elementary? Yes, they are all over each other. I had three boys in a dog pile while waiting for busses last week. They have zero sense of personal space. This is what 5 days a week for everyone looks like. Without mandatory testing, this is the best we can hope for in terms of catching cases before we have full blown outbreaks.

A FIFTEEN-MINUTE dog pile?

Common sense that kids are exposed sitting in a classroom for a 7-8 hour day. Come on use the big brain

They get exposed, and we have an 86% vaccination rate. That’s how we will get to herd immunity.

There is a 0% vaccination rate in Elementary school for students. You may be ok with exposure and covid as you'll just send your sick kid to school but others are not.

The teachers and staff are vaccinated. That’s how you protect those kids by vaccinating adults. If kids get exposed the consequence is minimal to the kids. Get a grip your kids will be exposed to all kinds of viruses. There is a major RSV outbreak currently, no vaccine against RSV. Children’s ICU is full with RSV infections.

I hope we turn our attention ruin to an RSV vaccine next. Does the virus just not affect boomers or the elderly enough?

There actually is an RSV vaccine but it is very expensive and has to be given monthly throughout RSV season. It is really only given to at risk kids and babies.

Why is that? Absurd.

I am the poster who said there is no RSV vaccine because there is no RSV vaccine https://www.cdc.gov/rsv/high-risk/infants-young-children.hamlet There is a drug called palivizumab used to prevent RSV in certain babies and children but there is no vaccine.
Anonymous
https://www.cdc.gov/rsv/high-risk/infants-young-children.html. no RSV vaccine. There is an outbreak of RSV and possibly parainfluenza happening earlier in the season than ever before because kids were kept apart last year.

Yup! This is what you wanted TogetherAgainMCPS, deal with it.

We want “TogetherAgainMCPS brought to you by new and competent leadership”. We got the former but not the latter.

Awww. Still bitter about having to pay for childcare and not being able to work in your jammies anymore? Here is the world’s smallest violin 🎻 playing for you.

What are you even on about? It’s parents who want free childcare. Nice try though! We know you only learned in the last year you can’t stand your own children, so you take it out on everyone else. I hope you get better soon!

DP. I don’t feel qualified to teach homeschool and the screen time aggravated my son’s condition very bad last year, my pediatrician tells us very little is best and the hours every day were way too much. I literally do not know what I would have done with public schools closed again as I cannot afford private. He’s so behind but his teacher is so understanding and says he’s not the only one.

If he is behind get some workbooks and work with him. Or, mcps offered tutoring and Saturday school last year. Lots of options.

You’re probably dealing w a microscopist who thinks that makes her an actual medical doctor. I wouldn’t worry.

I would definitely not listen to the microbiologist with a PHD that actually published this research. Nope ignore and have fun!

Something like 50k fake phds are sold each year. If you think a reuses n95 is better than a pristine well fitting filtered multilayered cloth mask, maybe you're one of them

Sorry buddy. It's a well fitting mask with 4 layers plus however many layers form the pocket which has a disposable filter and adjustable ear loops.
Because it's washable and came in a pack of 10 my child wears a newly washed one with a new filter every day. Your kid isn't wearing their n95 all day without taking it off to wipe sweat etc.
Science demands you use the best case that is also most usable. Enjoy the covid.

LOL okay

Why would I reuse a N95? Government issued is probably safe. Probably. Do what works for you lady. You can keep your multilayered beat fitted pristine amazing technicolored mask. Everything else is fake mask news.

This is not August 2020 and this Board needs to stop making its decisions like it is." You're correct. It isn't 2020- we are in a worse situation than we were last year. I wish you would keep up. This lady was mocked on the Daily Show for her testimonial bc it was insane. No one is impressed except the tiny group of people who don't care about student health.

Nailed it!

This is completely ludicrous and not based in science or CDC guidelines.

hey can't know with 100% certainty which kids within an overcrowded classroom came into contact over the course of several hours so quarantining the entire class is the best effort to follow CDC guidelines. I'm sorry you feel that isn't convenient but they are concerned with child safety.

It's absolutely not a best effort to follow CDC guidelines. In fact, it's the definition of a half-assed effort. They could enforce and monitor seating charts like other school districts so that quarantining can be targeted and effective. Having a classroom held hostage by a single kid exhibiting a single symptom evaluated by a school nurse is the height of poor management. What is going to change in the next few years? The virus is going nowhere. So this just how MCPS is going to conduct business now? The blowback is going to be fierce given how out of step they are regionally.

If the CDC wanted to recommend quarantining the entire class if one person in it has a covid symptom, then they could do so. But they specifically have NOT done so. Maybe you should write to them.

This isn’t CDC guidance. Full stop.

Please. It's not unreasonable to want MCPS, the public school system for the county that's home to NIH and FDA, to use *science* in determining guidelines, not whatever nonsense they deem will prevent any transmission of COVID in schools ever. God forbid they follow CDC or CHOP PolicyLab or the guidelines Ashish Jha and colleagues outlined for his kids' school system in Massachusetts, etc. Nope. Instead we get quarantines for any symptom, with no thought to practical considerations or any number of outcomes that matter for kids.

No. Your dumb group wants schools open no matter the cost. No matter if kids die. No matter if a kid brings it home to a relative. You are a selfish group of people hiding under PhD's (I hope deep down you all know that doesn't make you medical doctors because you sure don't act like it). Schools are open; you're now paying the price for a very disruptive year because that is exactly what you demanded.

Go back and re-read the bolded of what you wrote. And you think people should listen to you?

MCPS has already asked the county council to clarify the quarantine guidance because it is so out of step with the CDC and the rest of the country (and probably the world). Per Hucker a meeting is scheduled for September 24, where DHHS, CC, and Dr. McKnight will figure out how this craziness came about. The state and county is offering rapid tests to MCPS. Apparently, MCPS did not even ask and pretended that there are no tests. Everyone knows that the policy came straight from Dr Gayles. His last day is September 12 so they scheduled the meeting for September 13.
