Anonymous wrote:It was a well done episode. I'm surprised that nobody mentioned that Randall called William "Dad" for the first time when he was holding his face in his hands. That being said, I can't get past the fact that William abandoned his son. He could have gotten his shit together and raised him but chose not to. Not a big William fan so I'm glad this storyline is done.

He did get his shit together, and then asked to be a part of his life, but Mandy Moore froze him out.

Ok so this is one thing I didn't get. They showed William's downward spiral into drug use. They also showed him telling Mandy Moore that he was clean and wanted to be a part of his son’s life. I get that she didn’t want him to do that. What I don’t get is what William did for the next 30+ years? He was clean for a while yet never went back to see his cousin or join back up with the band. In some ways they make it sounds like he was a drug addict for a lot longer than he really was.

In last night's episode William told his cousin that he didn't go back because he was embarrassed about what he (William) had become.

I saw that, but was still confused because it seemed like his drug years didn't last that long, based on when he told Rebecca he was clean and wanted a relationship with his son. So what did he do for those 30yrs?

It's likely William went back to drugs after Rebecca made sure he wasn't part of Randall's life. It can be a lifelong struggle. My brother just passed away from an overdose after 30 years of using. He had clean periods of time, but lived with so much shame.

And William took up with that guy, remember?

I think that was later, in Philadelphia.

I think that William stuck around Pittsburgh for some years hoping that Rebecca would change her mind and he would get to meet Randall at some point. That probably evaporated after Randall reached adulthood.

Old William hugging his young mom when he dies. OMG that blew me away

William thanking Jack for raising his son and basically seeing that it took the two of them: WIlliam and Jack to make Randall the great man he is today

when Randall held William's head th3e way his dad did for him - I thought that was a bit too melodramatic for me - William wasn't having a panic attack and it seemed a bit contrived.

You don't know that William was clean and sober for 30 years - he could have been in and out of sobriety over those years.

I didn't think the connection between Randall and all the cousins seemed real. Like the other pp said - he only knew WIlliam for a few months and then he just met the cousins - I don't know. I get why they did it, but didn't resonate with me

I thought Randall doing the Oprah bit ("YOU get a cousin! "And YOU get a cousin!") was funny.

Why did he mention that he was raised by white people to explain his excitement over having cousins? I did not grow up in the US so did not get this cultural reference.

It's kind of hard to explain. It's not a dig or anything.

I think its more that these people are his blood and its the first time he's been in a room surrounded by blood relatives. Sometimes it means something, other times it doesn't.

I thought he was explaining away the Oprah thing, not the excitement about having cousins. Oprah (though AA herself) is a suburban, soccer mom, white person, kind of thing.

He was also drinking quite a bit, so it may have been like a silly, non-sequitur. He's trying to make a joke and it only kind of adds up, but yeah... It would be hard to explain and really make 100% sense to someone born outside American culture.

PP that said it's hard to explain. Yes, this is a good explanation. Basically it was a corny comment and in the black community we look at corny to mean white. Think Carlton Banks on Fresh Prince. It was definitely not due to drinking. It was intentional. I laughed out loud when he said it as I can totally relate to it. I am part white and whenever I have giddy, excited, moments or even sing a very white song, I'll say "oh, that must be my white side." We don't mean it as a put down at all. In fact, my family jokes that our good credit is our white side.

so what do people think will happen if the show continues next season. I like the show but kind of feel like everything will be out by the end of this season. So they just go forward a regular family drama?

The show has been renewed for the next two seasons. Don't count on everything being wrapped up so soon.

I think they must have more tricks up their sleeves to have it renewed for two more seasons. Or they may have to introduce additional characters.

I've read a couple places where Ron Cephas Jones (William) says he will be back in some capacity next season. He's my favorite, so I'm happy to hear it.

That was one gorgeous episode of television this week. So glad they reprised "Blues Run the Game" and the bus scene. That was my favorite part of the season early on.

Randalls mother was recast they swapped the actresses mid shot when they repeated the bus scene and then added to it. Anyone else notice that?

William will be back next EPISODE (and next season).

Anonymous wrote:I came apart the first time when William was thanking Jack for doing such a great job with Randall. I could barely contain myself by the end. I think that song at the end sung by a girl was the same song that William wrote for his cousin's bands. Excellent episode, but literally painful for me.

I liked the way William said to Jack's resting place, “Thank you for doing what I couldn’t. I would have liked to have met my son’s father.” The wording really got me.

It's a week away - anything could happen between now and then.

Check your DVR guide, it is already listed as a Presidential Address.

Yeah. Maybe he'll get impeached before then. Who knows?
