4 Drivers in our House- 1 Car

Anonymous
In 5 more months we've done it for 2 years. 2 college age kids w/ jobs. We do work from home. My point is it can be done, drop offs, uber every now and then, coordinated trips, walked places, rode a bike a few times etc.. Might've saved me enough to buy a new car cash. Car tax was a whole $196 this year. Camry has 84K miles on it! Might buy an electric scooter before any new 4 wheeled purchase. Ride on!

Good for you OP! You're a model in sharing. I remember I talked to one of my neighbors who asked when we would be getting a second car. It's just me and my husband as drivers and most of the time we metro to work, and I like walking to places. People need to be more flexible about their cars and how badly they need cars.

Nice one!! I hope we can do it with two cars when mine are old enough to drive.

It can be done because you all work at home. You don't have kids in activities either. Your kids are also adults.

We tried to practice being a 1car family. We last 3 days. My younger kid needed to go to the doctor and my husband had a dentist appointment. Doesn't work for our family but commendable that you guys committed.

You are an inspiration for me. We have three drivers, soon to be four, and have always had two cars. Both of our cars are very old and near the brink, but I cannot imagine having to replace one (much less both of them) with another gas-mobile. Meanwhile, my neighbors have four cars for three drivers. At least they acknowledge that they're Republicans, unlike the faux liberals down the street who have a car for every driver.

So, you are expecting other families to be responsible for your kids. You are one of those parents. You expect everyone to do for you.

Its not an inspiration as other people are driving their child around.

I have two college aged students and we've never owned more than one car at a time. We live in DC so Car2go combined with public transportation made it pretty easy. Car2go went out of business right before everyone was sent home for the pandemic. I'll be interested to see if we can make a go of it once everyone returns to the office.

I was the kid who drove my friends around. I loved it. It's really not the same as when parents are driving other people's kids.

4 drivers, 4 cars. Life is about choices.

When one of our two cars broke down, we just never bought another one. We have two kids. There are challenges sometimes but the thought of having spending $30K to have a second depreciating bucket of bolts in the driveway makes me quickly forget about them.

Yup. Mother Earth thinks you suck. Especially if 2 of those drivers are teens who don’t really need their own car.

Who are you to judge their choices? We recently cut back. Down to 4 cars for 3 drivers. At least until I find something fun to add.
