| Can a child have a social communication delay and not be autistic? Is there anything else that could cause a delay? |
| What is a social communication delay? |
|
Yes.
I have one child with ADHD and ASD. Another child with ADHD and what I had thought might be ASD because it fits the criteria of ASD on paper... but the more I read about nonverbal learning disorder, the more I believe it might be NVLD instead. From the web: Nonverbal learning disorder (NVLD) is a learning disability that causes difficulty with motor, visual-spatial, and social skills. Children with NVLD are often well-spoken and can write well, but struggle with subtle social cues and comprehension of abstract concepts. |
| Also ADHD and anxiety can look like ASD and vice versa. |

Social Communication Disorder as a stand alone: https://www.autismspeaks.org/expert-opinion/social-communication-disorder |
So is it basically autism? |
It isn't Autism, because Autism also includes the presence of repetitive or restrictive behaviors. Social Communication Disorder shares the other characteristics of Autism, but does not include repetitive or restrictive behaviors. |
| My 8yo son did not have repetitive behaviors until about age 4 or 5 but otherwise met criteria at age 3 |
My hfa ds had.mild repetitive behaviors until tween years then stopped. |
| Autism is just totally not defined at this point so on the mild end it’s so much guesswork. You might have to just wait and see and it may not come into clear focus until much later |
| Op do you have a neuropsych eval? You may be able to ask the evaluator to consider abstract thinking and pattern recognition to get a better idea of asd vs "something else." |
What does abstract thinking and pattern recognition have to do with autism? DS with ASD scored highest, 99%, on these in the WISC according to his neuropsych eval. |
| It is the PDD-NOS replacement. They say its not ASD but if you read it, its ASD simplified or the we don't know what is wrong with your kid so here is a label. |
Right. People with ASD score average to hghly in those areas but people with NVLD score on the low end. |
Really? When has ASD (or social communication disorder) ever been diagnosed by the WISC which is what you are saying here. |
