Camp- Kids Cabin Assignment

Anonymous
Say your drop off your 12 year old at camp for a week and on the third or fourth day you notice through pictures that it appears he's in a cabin with 15/16 year olds, so you call the camp but get no return call.

So on pick up day you ask whats up and they say they over booked the 12 age group so they moved a few up to the underenrolled 15/16 year old cabin.

Do you make a deal out of it?
Anonymous
Of course not.

No. It would have been best to create a "medium" cabin with maybe 12-14 year olds but what's done is done at this point. I wouldn't send him back, though, because it speaks to a larger disorganization issue.

I would ask my kid how they felt about it and if there were problems or things that made him uncomfortable, and only follow up if there was a real problem. If they moved up enough 12 year olds so he didn't feel out of place, it might not have been an issue.

I'd be more upset that you didn't get a return call.

What's done is done, but between these two issues, I'd probably be looking at a different camp for next year, unless my kid had an amazing time.

Wow I would be upset. In BSA safety rules you’re not allowed to tent/cabin with more than a 2 year age difference.

12 years old are still little boys. 16 year olds are pretty much men. Yes, it's odd.

+1. They should provided notice and allowed parents to have an option.

Yes you make a deal out of it! They need accountability, they are in charge of people's children. Don't make a stink out of it, but do make a big deal of it, it MATTERS! I would not want my almost 12 year old son with unknown 15-16 year old kids in a cabin. There are way too many variables that my child does not need to be introduced to yet. I could go on.

Some are hairier and taller than others but they're not "men."

You are why people hate dealing with kids.

"Pretty much", not "are".

And 16 is closer to adult than to 12. In MD, they are the age of consent.

Enjoying that you are referring to BSA as a safety standard. I am not being sarcastic. I really am!

I completely agree. I have a 16yr. old and an almost 13. And no, I would not put my younger one with a bunch of hormonal, dirty mouth 16 teenage boys.
