I took my rising kindergartener school supply shopping today and had so many questions! She’s so excited.
-They requested 8 packs of markers, but they’re only sold in 10 packs. This is fine right? -do things need labeled? Like the school supplies box or the headphones? -they requested 12 ziploc bags. Can I just send a box in or should I count out 12? - should I open the boxes of markers and crayons and put them in the plastic supply box? -they requested “regular crayons 8 count (8)” and then right below it “24 ct crayons (1)”. Is this a typo?? 8 packs of 8 crayons?! |

Teacher here. You are totally fine, your teacher will be grateful for anything you send in and anything extra is always appreciated!! To answer your questions-
-They requested 8 packs of markers, but they’re only sold in 10 packs. This is fine right? Yep! -do things need labeled? Like the school supplies box or the headphones? I would definitely label those major things, yes. Other things I wouldn’t as they may be communal (not sure though due to covid) -they requested 12 ziploc bags. Can I just send a box in or should I count out 12? Send in the box! Extra are great to have, teachers on my team are always looking for more ziplocks. We use them for lots of things, especially math games, centers, storing supplies - should I open the boxes of markers and crayons and put them in the plastic supply box? No- they’ll either keep them for communal box or have your kid do that on the first day -they requested “regular crayons 8 count (8)” and then right below it “24 ct crayons (1)”. Is this a typo?? 8 packs of 8 crayons?! I’d say that’s a typo! Maybe just get ur child an 8 pack and a 24 pack |

Oh, I remember wondering the same thing when my first started school! Then I found out that the list on the schools' website was NOT the same as the list sent by the grade's teachers later on that summer! And then I learned that it really didn't matter what I sent exactly, because they had plenty of supplies anyway and pooled them all (except for headphones and take-home folders, which needed labels)... as long as I sent something and of decent quality, it was fine.
So relax, OP. |
This is school-dependent. I work in a Title One school and we get maybe 50-70% of students who bring in all of the supplies. The other supplies have to come from somewhere and that somewhere is usually from the teacher. Just an FYI. |
|
Op here. I’m not super concerned. I’m pregnant and due the week before school starts so I might not have time to get things done closer to school start date.
Ordered labels then for the larger things. |
| And as a tip, don’t have your kid too excited about “his/her/their” supplies. The supplies get pooled. So the folders you select may or may not be the ones your child ends up with. |
10 is fine. Box of ziplock is great I always open everything and label everything including the crayons, pencils and headphones. I always send in extra boxes of wipes, crayons, pencils, ziplock bags, supply boxes, etc. as you can usually catch them on sale really cheaply for kids that don't have them. |
That's why you label them and do it in a few spots where its hard to cover up the labels. |
School and teacher dependent. Some teachers have extra stuff from years before if they didn't need it. But, do donate an extra set or two. Things like pencils in the summer are .50 a box so I usually send in 10 extra boxes or so. |
Generally yes, but our school didn't have shared supplies last year due to Covid and my oldest didn't have pooled supplies when she was in K in parochial school a few years ago. Don't worry about the details, OP. Just do the best you can and the teachers will help the kids figure out what to do with everything on the first day. |
| What about multicultural crayons 8 count? I’ve gone to two stores and they only have the 24ct. Is that okay or should I just get the expensive 8 count off Amazon? |
24 is fine. 8 Count are usually thicker. https://www.target.com/p/crayola-8ct-washable-large-crayons/-/A-14363827#lnk=sametab |
Those aren’t the multicultural ones. Target only sells the 24ct |
LOL, even when the boxes of pencils are labeled I still put all the boxes in the cupboard and pull them out as we need them. No one ever sees the label again but me as I'm tossing the box in the trash can. (ES Teacher) |

When my daughter was going to Kindergarten we went to Staples with the supply list. I handed her older brother his list and said -- go get what you need. I handed my daughter her list and said the same.
She stood there staring at the list intently for about a minute and then looked up at me and said : Mom! I can't read. Remember?!? I said, I remember -- was wondering if you did. So we looked for stuff together. I do think she thought that because it was the supply list for school -- she would magically just be able to read. LOL! Enjoy this time. |
