Workshops for aspiring journalists?

My 9 year old is interested in journalism. Is there a camp/class/workshop that will give her an idea what the profession really looks like?

No.

I have so many jokes to make right now about what being a journalist is really like!

In any case, sorry to be like "did you Google that?" but it does look like there's a lot of journalism camps for kids: https://www.google.com/search?q=journalism+camp+for+kids&oq=journalism+camp+for+kids&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i64.2927j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Please do not encourage this interest.

Get her a video camera and editing software. Have her develop her visual storytelling skills with that. Allow her access to social media to hone her marketing skills. But DO NOT enable her to go into print journalism. It's a bleak, bleak career field right now with no signs of getting better.

* journalist

In addition to being poor with no job security, I'm exhausted from overwork.

You're probably just a hack. My brother is a print journalist and makes about $150k per year (salaried) plus benefits and is early 30s.

Agreed; encourage writing - any kind, not as a profession but as a skill - and I like the idea of having her learn tech first (and storytelling second) by making videos, could be mini documentaries or whatever.

Your brother is an outlier. Take a look at all the publications that have shuttered or downsized over the last year, and decade, and two decades.

omg, he does not. Unless he's one of the vulture capitalists who are killing the industry and then he's extremely bad at his job.

LOL. I worked as a print reporter for 16 years and never made close to that money, so I call bs. I wish I could say to encourage this interest but I know writers, reporters, photographers, editors being laid off or taking buyouts in drives. It would be better to do what the pp says. Encourage multimedia interests and have her learn good writing. Read On Writing by Stephen King. Visit a newsroom if you must. Might be tough right now with COVID.
Look at Poynter and SPJ.
Teach her how to write for video. Totally different than print, and way more in demand.

I don't think so. You may notice this is an anonymous forum. There's more than 1 section editor at that journal
