Second week postpartum and so hungry

Anonymous
Third kid but I don’t remember my other post partum times being like this. I’m combo feeding just like I did with my other two kids but this baby is a better nurser so might be getting more milk.

I’m just starving all the time and craving especially rice (something I don’t usually eat). I’m eating way more calories than I want to be. My usual tricks of eating lots of low cal veggies and fruits doesn’t seem to be touching it. Been going out of my way to get more leafy greens and beef for the iron.

Obviously post partum the last thing I want to do is gain weight. Anyone have any advice? Maybe I’m missing a nutrient I haven’t thought of?

protein? healthy fat? eggs, avocados, nuts, etc.

Oh my goodness. You just gave birth and are breastfeeding. Counting calories should not be on your radar! Eat!

This thread is a profoundly sad commentary on being a woman.

Your body is working really hard to recover and produce milk. It takes a lot of calories to do all that work.

I say this as gently as I possibly can, please eat when you're hungry and don't worry about calories right now. Your body is telling you what it needs - rice? Carbs, energy! - listen to it! Eat whole foods (sounds like you are), don't eat processed junk (sounds like you're not), and enjoy your newborn.

Congratulations!

+2 Jfc your body is depleted. East whatever you want especially calorie dense foods. I can’t even imagine calorie counting while trying to recover from birth and establish breastfeeding.

+1

You need carbs for milk production.

Just eat! If you’re breastfeeding efficiently I’ve heard it burns 500 calories a day, so you’re going to need extra food. I too was eating like a horse postpartum with both my kids; the weight had all fallen off by the time my babies were 3 months old.

Eat. I ate about 3000-3500 calories a day with DS1 and lost all the pregnancy weight plus another 35 pounds. I was starving hungry for months and needed carbs and fat.

You need to eat things like avocado and nuts, daily. Give your body what it needs. This is not the time to try to lose weight.

No advice but I’m almost 7 weeks pp and still ravenous. Eating mostly nutritious foods but with some treats in there I’ve gained 7 lbs in past couple of weeks. Call me vain but I’m not happy about it. “The weight just calls off while breastfeeding” isn’t true for many of us.
