Can we finally drop the outdoor masks, Sidwell?!! Am not looking forward to my son masking outside the next couple of weeks. This is our only camp where it is required.

The thing is, some people signed up for that camp taking the mask policy into account. They like the masking rules. Changing them now would not be fair to those who like the rules.

If you don’t like the rules that were set out, you shouldn’t have signed up for the camp

What other camps require masks outdoors?

Interesting - did not know that they are the lone hold-out.

I'm all for pushing Sidwell to drop this. I have a camper and agree that the outdoor masking mandate is ridiculous. Please email the director with your concerns; I certainly will.

why should the most conservative approach be the default? masks outside are a considerable burden in the summer and they don’t contribute to safety. maybe other parents signed up with the expectation that the camp would adjust to changing circumstances.

I think most expected camps would adjust. We all signed up in the height of the pandemic with the expectation that safety measures would reflect the scientific reality at the time. It was a risk we took that we would not be satisfied with the measures in place at the time.

I think DC guidance still requires schools and camps to wear masks indoors and outdoors - seems safe and prudent right now since the younger campers are not vaccinated.

NPS and Norwood all mask outdoors too so looks like given other responses Sidwell is inline with other area independent school camps. If parents don"t like the current guidelines ask for a refund but I am all for keeping these younger kids safe. We've made it this far - let's wait until the elementary crowd can get vaccinated

This. It’s time to start putting the pressure on the camps. This will help with a no mask policy when school starts in the fall

Why do we want a no mask policy at school in the fall? I will be upset if my unvaccinated 11.5 year old is not masked and is around unmasked and unvaxxed people inside.

My 5yo is fine with a mask outside at camp (it's optional at his camp). What's the issue?

Then keep them home until they can be vaccinated, you will always have the choice to keep them home if you aren't comfortable. I think the mask policy in the fall will vary- I see counties like MoCo and Fairfax following the CDC (requiring masks for unvax) but I suspect others will follow the state rules- IIRC Charles county has already dropped the mask requirement.

I'd like to see the mask requirement drop for vaccinated teachers at the very least because one of my kids had a teacher who sounded incredibly muffled in a mask which made learning challenging. We need to acknowledge both the upsides and downsides of masks when making these decisions, but unfortunately that doesn't always happen.
