I’m the OP of this thread: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/983199.page
We have opened up our search to Cora Kelly. Any feedback here? |
I don't have personal experience, but know happy families from there. |
There's a pretty active ACPS families Facebook group, you might try this question there to find a larger continent of people who attend the school? I haven't seen much about Cora Kelly on the boards here. |
Agree with the above - all of the ACPS elementary schools seem to have active parent groups on Facebook where you can find personal experiences, good and bad (instead of anonymous trolling from fcps and private school families that you get on here).
My (Del Ray) neighbor teaches at CK and she always seems to be doing really cool stuff with her students, for what it’s worth. |
The school is supposed to be some kind of math and science focus. The school has some of the lowest math and science scores in the City 😞 |
Mt Vernon and Cora Kelly are fine. Yes there are poor kids there. Stop obsessing over it and just buy the best house for you. No school is perfect and you cannot control the teachers your child gets or the group of kids they are with which really make the experience. I don't mean to be flippant because I get the anxiety, but they are both fine. I know the principal at Cora Kelly and she's great and I would love the spanish immersion at Mount Vernon. |
JFC. This isn’t about whether there are poor kids there. This is about overall feedback and whether people like the programs. I want to buy a place, this is one of the biggest investments I can make for my family and it feels very permanent since ACPS doesn’t allow for out of bounds transfers. |
DP. I don't know about anyone else but if you can't respond to a simple statement without cursing then we are better off without you and it would be nice if you go someplace else. Thanks much. |
PP implied that I care more about the socioeconomic status of the student body than the program. That’s offensive. Sorry you find it distasteful that I used an abbreviation that indicates my disgust for their comment. The various programs within the City are pretty different and I’m trying to get a feel for whether people like the programs. |
If you can't show distaste without cursing then you would be better off going somewhere else. You set a bad example when you curse and your kind are not needed here. |
You sound super fun to hang with. I guess I will do well by avoiding you. |
Perfectly fine school. Smaller than most in Alexandria, so the teachers get to know most of the students. Very diverse, with a significant ELL population. PTA has really stepped up in the past few years and makes a big effort to be inclusive, which isn't typical. I don't know of any "program" at CK. It isn't dual-language like MVCS or JA |
I was mostly asking because it’s designated as magnet school (which doesn’t make much sense, since kids can’t go out of bounds at this point). I think it’s supposed to be for math and science? |
With respect to Cora Kelly. Great neighborhood and community. I know a parent on the PTA who has said it is a struggle to get parents to engage. An active and well-funded PTA does enhance a school's programs. Teachers do not need to work so hard to obtain funding or volunteers for all sorts of special projects and PTAs help fund on-site or off-site enrichment programs as well.
That said, according to the parent on the CK PTA, I have heard positive things about the school's staff. They go above and beyond and try to support every family. As the others have noted, it is one of the smallest schools so if you're looking for a smaller classes in grades 1-5, that will be helpful. |
