| First child is heading to a school with exams in December; neither of us had this experience. Do they just hang out with friends for a month? Travel? Volunteer? I assume it’s too short a period to find paid work. |
| Catch up on sleep, hang out with friends, take care of medical and bureaucratic issues (passport renewal, visiting dentist), visit grandparents. Family vacation. It goes quickly. |
| I had a retail job over the holidays when I was in college - same place I worked over summer. I also babysat. |
| Tough getting a job after the holidays. One of my kids was an athlete to his break was cut short due to training. I think UMDCP offers a winter course if you need a class (you will have to pay extra for this). |
| I always got office work through a temp agency. |
| smoke weed and hit on chicks |
| December exams and January return are standard for American colleges. Students have a month off between semesters to relax, catch up with friends from high school and spend time with family. Some might work at a job that they held in high school. Some colleges offer brief courses or study abroad programs during that time. |
| Most would get jobs. Retail stores, courting end of year inventory, restaurant jobs, etc. |
| Play video games |
| Hang out with friends, get into fights with parents about curfews and independence as everyone tries to navigate "kids" (who are young adults) being back "home" for a few weeks and the "Kids" want the same freedoms they had while away at school and moms say they are all for independence but they can't sleep unless they know the "kids" are home. |
I think this is ideal, though if your child needs the money it is usually possible to find paid retail work, especially if you live in a location that has a large shopping center or big box stores. |
You are a dated, sexist jerk. Guess what, not all college students are male. |

Beside relaxing and celebrating the holidays with family, my kid used that time to apply for internships (for the following summer). Make sure that they ask faculty if they are willing to write letters of recommendation before they leave campus (because the applications require names of recommenders, and some faculty are hard to reach during breaks).
One year, my poor kid also got her wisdom teeth removed. Ouch! |
Oh god. Have a sense of humor! And not only women are allowed to respond to OP. |
| I worked retail or office temp jobs. |
