While out of town over the weekend I lost some valuable jewelry. It has been searched for for hours and it's like it - poof - disappeared.
One major problem in the whole scenario is that I don't have a conscious memory of taking it off and placing it somewhere - like I remember getting ready for bed, and I watched a show on my iPad, but removing the jewelry is a blank. I believed that I put it in the drawer of the bedside table next to the bed, which is what I would normally do, so that may be why I don't remember - I feel like it's that autopilot effect. You drive home but you don't really remember it type thing. I believed that so much that the drawer is where I went in the morning to put it on and that's when I realized it wasn't there and I panicked. I am seriously thinking about finding someone to hypnotize me or some sort of guided memory thing. If you have ever found something you were sure had been lost, what happened? |

I mean…were you out of town in a hotel? Theft is a possibility.
Did you check all the nooks and crannies of the entire bedside table area? Would you have put the jewelry in an interior pocket of a purse or suitcase? A pocket of your clothes? |
| I often put things in a "safe place" only to never find it again. Like my passport. I once put a sizable gift card to a fancy resort again in a safe place and it turned up years later after being written off as lost. It was in my filing cabinet where I put documents for safe keeping, but not normally things like gift certificates. But it was still valid and we enjoyed a night out on it. |
Relative's house, so theft is not likely. Believe me - every piece of clothing/luggage/backpack/purse had been searched - three times. The bedroom searched - took the mattress off the bed, drawers out of the dressers, etc. I went through the trash. I have considered every insane possibility, including that I sleepwalked and just threw it in the trash. |
| When I don’t put it where I “should” (eg drawer) it’s usually in the pouch of a bag (makeup, purse, whatever). |
|
Under the couch cushions? I freaked out over losing a new Kindle on vacation, and like you had no recollection of where I'd put it. Turned out my son had been reading it last, on the couch, and it had slipped under the cushions. Could the bracelet or necklace have snapped and it fell somewhere? |
| Was it a single piece of jewelry like a necklace, or multiple pieces? If a single piece, it’s possible to fell off at some point during your evening and you didn’t notice…hence why you have no memory of removing it at the end of the night. |
|
Did you check near all the window ledges? How about your pockets? Or that little zipped part of your purse interior? Maybe it’s in your toothbrush holder. Did it roll under the bed? Could it be in a pillow case? A glasses case?
What’s missing? |
OP here. Multiple - like pieces you wear every day. Wherever it is, it's all together. I immediately thought the inside zipper pocket of my purse, but nope. Also nope to inside pockets of luggage, makeup bag, etc. I mean, when I say it's like it disappeared into thin air, it really did. |
OP, now be real with us - was there alcohol involved

| Lost my wedding ring - I thought I had taken it off to take a bath and searched the trash, made my husband take apart the sink U-bend to see if it somehow fit down the drain, tore the house apart. Gave up on it and was really beating myself up then about a week later heard a *ting* as I was putting laundry into the washer in the basement - I guess it fell off the sink into my dirty clothes which got put into the hamper before I even missed the ring. |
| Give up the Booze OP it's doing you no favors. |
| Catholics pray to st Anthony. My mom once lost her engagement ring in a mall parking lot. After sitting around praying, we decided to call back the security at the mall AGAIN to see if anyone had found it. Amazingly someone had, and had left a note with her number with the mall cops. She had it in her lap in the car because she put on lotion— and stood up to get out of the car forgetting it was in her lap. |

We lost a Tivo remote once for months, and downloaded an app on our phones to replace the remote. It was tedious.
Maybe 6 weeks later we found it in the bottom of a bag destined for Goodwill -- our toddler had put it there. |

I've found that whenever something vanishes into thin air, I generally find it within the vicinity that I thought it was, but only after searching it for the 100th time. One time something was literally swept under the rug. Check every nook and cranny of the end table.
Replay the events of the day. Was there an activity that you guys did that was not jewelry friendly? You may have take it off earlier than you would have usually to put on a bathing suit or go for a hike. Do you have a pool bag or a bag you would bring for excursions? |
