| Good Morning, my son is an 06 and will be heading to NC for ECNL matches this weekend and next week. First time going. I'm told there are plenty of college coaches/scouts around. I know my son is young but does anyone have any advice for these kids...for all ages I guess...to put their best foot forward and take advantage of the opportunity other than to just play well. : ) Thank you. The other ECNL Playoff thread seemed to be about girls and it was too long for me to go through and see if this was touched on. Thank you in advance. |
| Just play and have fun. Don’t expect any $ for college for playing soccer. On the men’s side, the little money that goes to men’s players primarily goes to overseas players. |
OP Here. Thanks. Totally understand about the zero money thing, but my kid does want to play in college. |

There is misnomer that since many coaches are on the list that there will be scores of them at all the games, no matter the level.
College coaches are unlikely to be at games below rising juniors unless there is prior relationship and is coming to game specifically to see the player. If you know if some schools your child is interested in and they're going to be there, might be worth reaching out in case they have some time and can catch your son. But mostly just enjoy the event and maybe if you see a coach from school you are interested you can make personal contact. Note that your child cannot talk to coaches before before his junior year. |
I might be wrong but it is my understanding that scouts don't really look at kids below the 10th/11th grade, unless they are exceptionally good. You got time. |
This past year there were more scholarships available than ever, because many foreign players didn't come back due to COVID. Some schools were hurting for players. Would love to see a cap on foreign players in college soccer, but doubt that will happen. Win, Win, Win. |
I almost agreed with you but then thought...if we don't want these spots going to foreign players, then we need to get better. Not the foreign players fault for being better than the domestic players. It's a business. You take the best available. |
| Comical how there is almost nothing posted regarding the ECNL Boys Playoffs, but the girls thread is 20-some pages deep. The data suggests that the girls’ parents are way nuttier than the boys’. |
We've known that for quite awhile, now! |
Yep, it's been a good week in NC. Not much to complain about. Kids decide it on the field. |
We have a U14 daughter and a U11 son who both play on "elite level" (eye roll just saying it) teams. There is no comparison in the level of craziness between boys and girls. It is absolutely insane some of the things I personally witness and hear about on the girl's side. We even know a couple parents who are fine for their son's team, but the daughter's team they are compete psychos on and off the field. You can just see the craziness on most of these threads. Every conversation will eventually run off the rails and turn into something related to girls soccer or teams no matter the subject. |
Just like it has now, in this thread. |
I have all sons, but to be real, soccer scholarships for boys are a non-starter and not many to great universities like the girls. At some point, boy parents realize this and chill the f*ck out. The girls actually have options. signed, a girl that had a full D1 ride |
Maybe at a private college, but I don't want my tax money to fund only foreign students playing ball at a public university. If they were so good, then they would have made it back home. |
Soccer scholarships for boys are not as available as they are for girls but they are not a non-starter. And some schools have a lot more money available for boys soccer than other schools. |
