I know I shouldn’t care, but I can’t help but be curious. Our HHI is 575 and we have one car: a 2014 Honda Fit. I just love it. It’s in good condition as far as mechanics go and I can parallel park really easily. We have two kids, no pets, so with the bike rack we have it works well for our lifestyle. And I suppose I’m also just used to it. It does have some scratches and some of the interior is getting worn, but I don’t care about those things that much.
A friend of mine teased DH and I for our car (it truly was good-natured, she is a genuine friend), and it got me wondering if this is just really weird. I won’t buy a new car until we need one but I am just curious if people who have an idea of what our HHI is because of job titles and our zip code kind of scratch their heads when they see our car. |
Around here people probably do wonder, but who cares what they think? I personally find anything other than the ubiquitous giant suvs and German cars refreshing. |
| I'm ready to get my car wrapped in purple with orange and blue polka dots so I can find it in the parking lot. Who cares what people think of what you drive! |

Some people like to go all out in their vehicle. I enjoy driving my 2008 CRV. The cd player doesn't even work. Do they have cd players anymore in cars?? I listen to the regular stations only. Thing since are getting worn but I have a seat cover. When I do sell it/if i can sell it, I want it to be in good condition if there is such definition with an 'old' car. Nothing fancy. I like to drive it till it doesn't feel safe anymore.
I feel like if I get something fancy, I have to be extra cautious of it like any new car. |
| I don't know and I don't care-- I drive a Prius and it's the best thing ever. |

People judge based on what they value. People who are really into cars judge people for their cars. That's what they value so that's where they spend money, so they tend to assume that if your car is not awesome it's because you're too broke to upgrade. You see it on these forums in every way imaginable - people who value private schools assume that you either are poor, or if they know you have money they assume you don't value education if you send your kids to public. People who value a big house assume you're broke if you have a small house, people who value living close to their jobs assume you're broke if you live in the suburbs. Some if it is a failure of imagination, some of it is that they need many people to value what they value to justify where they've sunk their costs.
Never matters. |
High-end Audi driver here: I doubt there is much judgment. A lot of "car people" have fond memories of the peppy little Hondas we used to drive, and I, for one, would view that particular choice as reflecting good judgment about cars from a performance perspective. It's better than seeing yet another Jeep Rubicon in the carpool line. lol Anyone judging you for this is not worth worrying about anyway. |
OP here and yes, that last sentence is another reason I like my car! The son of an acquaintance of mine dented our car ever so slightly when he opened his door, and it was so nice to be able to just shrug it off. I have to be around this woman frequently and I love it that it didn’t make things weird. |
| We have similar HHI and I am adamant about my base model minivan because it's cheap, functional and will be trashed by kids. I do not believe in overspending on cars. Period. And I don't give a fig what people think about it. I cannot understand how people throw away money on cars. But to each his/her own. If you're happy with your car, enjoy it. |

I don’t think it’s weird at all!
I drive a 2012 Lexus. It’s in good condition and we’ll drive it onto the ground. |
| I have a Nissan and HHI of 500k. I prefer to fly under the radar. No need to be the target of crazy drivers, police or criminals. I will get flamed but 500k is not enough to justify a nicer car, at least for me. I don’t even have a garage and need to send my kids to college some day. |
| Nobody is noticing or thinking about your car unless you are driving something super expensive (like $200k+). |
| I would personally only judge people who drive things like hummers or a Porsche suv (not a good Porsche but a Porsche suv just seems particularly egregious), a suburban or anything obnoxiously large or flashy. It’s people who drive understated performance cars I like or environmentally friendly cars or drive their cars into the ground because they value other things. I would respect you. |
Ha we have a HHI of $250 and drive a Nissan. I love it. I hope you at least sprang for the larger engine.

As long as it’s reasonably clean, nothing is hanging off of it, and you don’t drive slowly in the left lane, I’m not giving your car another thought.
