If they want UVA or W&M apply ED to the one they like better and they’ll be a lock for W&M and a 90%+ chance for UVA.

Thanks. We’re looking in state because of cost. ED sounds like good idea.

Good luck. Have you identified a few safeties/ likely admit schools?

Gpa is on the low side for UVA for sure and maybe W&M unless it’s a boy. Definitely apply ED If interested in either. You could do UVA first and if they don’t get in, could do ED2 at W&M.

Lowest GPA accepted to UVA from our Va public was 4.40.

all the makings there - but a lot more goes into the decision now than just grades and test scores.

Just saw that it is a boy so good chance for W&M. Also I will confess to not knowing much about the Ib so check your schools
Naviance to see how the GPA stacks up against accepted students.

How could the GPA be low if the kid only has had 2 B pluses?

That’s the gpa the school gives. 2 AP courses in 10th. 6 IB courses in 11th. Will take 7 IB in 12th. How on earth do people get 4.4s?

Probably all honors starting in 7th grade Algebra, 3 IB in 10th, 7 IB in 11th.
My kid is also at an IB high school, and our Naviance shows several 4.3s for UVA, but nothing below that, and the higher test scores do not make up for a lower GPA. There is a hard gpa line on the graph.
For WM, 4.25 is a good gpa, and the test score helps.

Well schools do calculate differently so that could be the issue. Our school gives a .5 gpa bump for honors courses and a full 1.0 for AP and DE. Always best to see where your DC “ranks” within their class as opposed to comparing to other students in other schools. If the 4.25 is top 5% then he’s got a great shot at UVA.

No .5 bump for honors courses or intensified courses. That must be it.

In terms of ED, DC should have a strong preference after considering and visiting both, as they are very different schools. My DD is an incoming W&M freshman this fall—she wouldn’t even consider applying to UVA. I know this goes both ways. I would think he has a good chance in either, although my DD had a higher GPA, but slightly lower SAT.

My DS with those exact scores got in ED at W&M. He would have applied to UVA also (preferred W&M) but didn't because ED was successful. Naviance in his school had virtually no admits under 4.4 for UVA. You could get in with 4.4 GPA and 1250 SAT, but you couldn't get in with 4.2 and 1500 SAT. W&M seemed to balance GPA and SAT.

Is this Arlington county?
If so, you can’t compare to FCPS students because the APS grading scale is so much easier. Does your school have Naviance?
