The kid is a shoo in to either school.

My DD is an incoming W&M freshman this fall—she wouldn’t even consider applying to UVA. I know this goes both ways. I would think he has a good chance in either, although my DD had a higher GPA, but slightly lower SAT.

This is true, they are very different schools so do a tour of both, talk to kids you know who attend and the choice will become clearer for them. My DS likes the size, location and culture of W&M but is a sports lover so in the end he weighed it out and UVA was the first choice with W&M a close second.

DD hated the dorms and the location of W&M and was UVA all the way, didn’t even have W&M on the list.

They ate so different with very different admissions results as well. The PP was right that UVA is all about GPA and if it’s not there, you’re not getting in no matter your scores.

well that is just not true.. what are you basing that on? We don't know where the 4.25 GPA falls in his class... and that will be the determining factor for UVA.

My DS has similar stats, with a 4.31 gpa. We are planning to ED UVA. We are in FCPS. Will apply for WM RD.

I agree

Full IB is key. Not sure how both schools treat that. Some schools love IB.

If they want UVA or W&M apply ED to the one they like better and they’ll be a lock for W&M and a 90%+ chance for UVA.

The current dynamics are forcing kids towards ED, which means in practice they have to figure out sooner what they really want in a school. This sounds like a pretty good chance at either with ED.

Make sure to have some safeties lined up as well. Things can change quickly.
