When can we lose masks in elementary school?

Anonymous
I appear to be a minority in this area, but I'm so upset to hear kids at our charter will be required to wear masks in the fall. Couldn't they at least say they're waiting to hear what guidance will be in the fall? Are they going to have little kids wearing masks for another year and a half until the vaccine is approved for them? Is there any hope of dropping them sooner if spread is low? It seems so unnecessary. I wish they would drop the rest of the theater as well and let kids interact normally in their classrooms.
Anyone have any insight?

I’m with you OP, but I think we’re in the minority. I’m hoping they get rid of masks for recess at least.

Where are you hearing 18 months for kids vaccines?

I think there are higher priorities than ending masking. Let's get all the kids back in the building, specials, switching classes, regular recess etc . . . and then see how the virus is spreading before making a decision on masks.

The whining by privileged parents is really ridiculous.

What’s the rationale for dropping masks indoors since they are not vaccinated? I agree, no masks outdoors though.

Because they are uncomfortable, interfere with teaching, and uneccesary when there’s extremely low community spread.

OP here. The presentation from our school with their fall plans said they were being told end of 2022 for vaccines. I haven't been following that and haven't confirmed.
I wouldn't mind what you describe if there was some discussion of dropping the masks if things are going well. But they make it sound as if they're permanent!

My kids have not complained about masks while doing IPL. What interferes with learning is going to school 2 hours a day, 4 or 2 days a week, as is the case for my kids in a DCPS ES. Masks while indoors is the easiest thing to keep doing so we can return to a normal schedule until kids can get the vaccine

I think mask guidelines should follow community spread metrics. If the spread and new case count is low then the systems can relax the masking. If or when the spread increases (winter) masks can be implements again. Blanket mandates are much tougher to swallow at this point.

I think end 2022 is a very pessimistic read. More like end 2021 or early 2022. Maybe typo? The tests are under way already. Agree with others that masks are a pretty low price to pay right now. Should stay until vaccinated. Could turn out to be different but could also have more spread of variants, etc..

Pfizer has said they will submit the data for approval for ages 5-11 in September, then it takes a bit to be reviewed and approved (the 12+ one took about a month), and then kids have to get vaccinated, and that takes 5 weeks from first shot, so I'd think It will take into the first part of 2022 to have kids starting to be fully vaccinated in large numbers. I'd hope that they would say that kids could stop wearing masks once they show they are fully vaccinated, but I doubt it would actually work that way.

Agree. And if community spread is high enough that kids need masks, everyone else needs masks too.

Clearly, you are a complete idiot.

Learn the science and please get your children educated better than you.
