Legally if a woman cancels a wedding does she have to return the ring?

Anonymous
Is she like breaking a contract and so it reverts back to being his property?
Anonymous
Most courts consider it a gift.

It depends on the state.

I believe it varies by state. Typically an engagement ring is considered a gift, not a deposit.

Most States consider them conditional gifts, and if the wedding does not happen, no matter who cancels it, it must be returned if requested.

Depends on the state but since she canceled in most states she would have to return it. In many states even if she did not cancel it she would still have to return it.

No, this is incorrect. Most states do not require a return of the ring.

It depends on the state/jurisdiction.

This is complicated enough that we discussed it as an example in my law school contracts class!

Just say you lost it. Case closed.

Nice way to get tangled up in insurance fraud.

If she's the one who breaks it off then morally and ethically she should return the ring. Legally whether it is considered a conditional gift varies by state.

It's going to depend on the state, OP. Where are you located?
