| Is it usually this cold at the start of summer swim? The water temp is probably 70 degrees, if that, with all the rain and colder weather this weekend. Do teams make younger kids jump in anyway? My daughter is in the 9-10 and hates cold water. Literally turns blue, lips chattering. I don't think she's going to be able to swim. This is our first year, so curious if this is normal. |
| This is the reason my kids never joined the swim team. Morning practices with cold water didn’t sound fun to them. |
| We often get a week of cool weather in early June; of course, we'll all forget about that very soon as temps soar into the 90s. In the meantime, take hot chocolate, thick towels, fleeces and blankets. |
| Ours will cancel for the youngest this week, the oldest will be in the water, the only question is where they will draw the line |
| This is part of being a swimmer. Yes it’s cold. They get used to it. Make sure to teach them what to do if they get a muscle cramp so they don’t freak out in the water. |
| I would rather a cold pool than a too warm one. It is possible to sweat while you are swimming! |
You think it's 70, or it's been measured at 70? Big difference. Mine complained about how cold it was, but it measures at 85 (it's been heated all winter). That still feels cold when it's cold and rainy out, especially to skinny little kids. But it's good for swimming in cold weather, too warm in warm weather. |
| Yea, we did a trial day with our pool’s swim team and my ds basically said “nope” and left the pool. The poor kid is super skinny and has no insulation on him. He couldn’t take the cold water. |
| It’s normal. Freezing now, too warm after lots of hot days. |

Yes, it’s hard on the youngest kids, or kids who aren’t strong swimmers. Once they get to be strong swimmers, they spend their time in the water moving which warms them up. But they get over it, with each subsequent year they become better swimmers and larger in mass, which helps keep them warm.
If the air temp is below 60 though, our coach will do dry land exercises instead. |
What summer swim outdoor pool is heated?! |
| Yes this is normal weather. It will warm up quickly. |
Dominion Hills. NCAP used it all winter. Pool water was 80+ |
Our old pool had a solar panel thing that the water ran through to warm it up. I don’t think it’s that uncommon. |
Our club’s lap pool is heated and allows for practices to comfortably start in early May. They don’t keep it heated once the weather warms up, obviously, but it allows them to extend the season from April through September for lap swimmers. |
