Cold pool for first week of summer swim

Anonymous
The weather is supposed to be right around 80 degrees (give or take a couple of degrees) all week. Tue and Wed are partly or mostly cloudy. Will that make it too cold to swim? I want my kids to check out the swim practices but cold water could deter them from joining swim team.

Do teams make younger kids jump in anyway? My daughter is in the 9-10 and hates cold water. Literally turns blue, lips chattering. I don't think she's going to be able to swim. This is our first year, so curious if this is normal.

You think it's 70, or it's been measured at 70? Big difference. Mine complained about how cold it was, but it measures at 85 (it's been heated all winter). That still feels cold when it's cold and rainy out, especially to skinny little kids. But it's good for swimming in cold weather, too warm in warm weather.

What summer swim outdoor pool is heated?!

Ours is heated and opens May 1st

Ours is heated and rented out to NCAP last fall.

Yes, it is like this every year for the first ~3 weeks of practice.

This is my kids 4th year of swimming (in other states) but they have never swum in an unheated/cold pool. What do you do for a muscle cramp? They love swimming and summer swim but I think they will refuse. I don’t blame them. Can they wear wet suits? What do people do?

It was upper 50s for two days, with rain and overcast. Today is mid 70s. Tomorrow will start to heat up, with overcast and rain though. There's no way an unheated outdoor pool can be warmer than 70-75 degrees, and probably on the lower end of that. That's freaking cold.

Tell the coaches she’s finishing up some other sport and can’t swim until next week

No people don’t wear wet suits. They swim to warm up. I’m seriously shocked by this discussion. It’s cold at the beginning of baseball. Soccer plays in the pouring rain. I don’t see how a cold start to summer swim is any different.

I was a D1 athlete in pouring rain, freezing rain, 101* heat, etc. and you could not pay me $100 to jump in a 65* pool. I am the wet suit person and I don’t find this discussion weird at all...?

My swimmer much prefers the early season cold to the late season bath water temps. They warm up as they swim, so the first shock of cold water goes away quickly when they’re actually working out. Coaches should know to keep them moving.

When he was little, my son was underweight with low body fat and used to turn blue all the time when he went in the water, even at the height of summer.

I bought him a neoprene suit, the thickest I could find for kids. Not just the regular thin wetsuits, which do nothing! I believe you can now find them on Amazon.

^ however a thick wetsuit might not be allowed during races, PP.

Yep. Even if the pool is heated in May the nights can still be cool and it’s hard for the pool heater to keep up.
He will adjust.
