DS3 has been out of daycare for a bit over a year due to COVID. We are exploring options for Fall 2021 and are considering two options:
Return to old daycare: Year round care, meals included, 5:45am-6:30pm hours (he'd probably be there roughly 8:30am-4pm but the flexibility to come at 4:30/5pm on some days would be nice). Private school PK3: Regular school calendar (August to May/June), regular school breaks (winter, spring, summer, etc.), 8:30-3pm hours, must bring lunch/snacks. The private school is $5K/year cheaper which would be a pretty good savings, but there's obviously no summer care or care during school breaks. Both DH and I WFH, so DS would probably be home with us on breaks (unless we're on vacation) like he is now. I don't imagine him going to any summer camps at age 4 next summer. Our DD9 will probably do a mix of summer camps/staying home like she does now. WWYD? DH wants the cheaper option of course, but we can truly afford either option. |
I mean having him home with you and being distracted from work has a cost too (and if you’re the primary caregiver when he'shome, your husband needs to respect this). So while it may be cheaper there's a tradeoff for sure.
So don't pick the cheaper one just because it's cheaper. Those savings will be paid out either in substitute care or in effort. |

This sounds like a horrible option for any child. |
Daycare. no 3 year old learns anything in daycare. letters?? They learn that at home. Kids learn to read at home. Buy Bob books and decodable reader sets. If you set yourself up to expect preschool to teach your kid, they will fall behind. Daycare open rain/shine/holidays. there's your answer |
Are you for real? Or just trying to stir the pot? |
If you both work FT, the preschool really does not sound like an option. |
What is "horrible" about a 3 year old being in day care from 8:30-4, or even until 5? |
Is your older child at the private school, or is it a stand alone preschool? Is there a dfference in location? |
Daycare |
What does DH do when your child is home but you’re both working? The fact he automatically wants the cheaper thing makes me think he isn’t very burdened by the child being home. |
We are in the same situation and chose the daycare we were with pre-Covid. Ultimately because I’m unable to tour new schools right now I felt more comfortable with this choice. I think actual pre-k is different than preschool for 3 year olds. |
Is your husband looking after the shopping and packing of the food for the preschool. Will he be involved in looking after him when the preschool is closed several weeks a year. |
What sounds horrible about it? |
There are people who troll this forum to badmouth any and all daycare pushing nannies or SAHM. Best to ignore them |
How old is your kid? Are they on the older/younger sides of their school year? How many years do you expect that they would stay at the new place? How convenient are the locations? Is the cheaper option still cheaper when you add in the summer? |
