Kids With Special Needs and Disabilities
|
I would like to line up a tutor for my DS for the summer. Reading and math. he is 7, ADHD and processing issues.
Thoughts on Linda-Mood Bell? or any others? |
| We are using a tutor from the Lab School and she is wonderful, and very competent. |
I totally forgot about them! Thanks for the reminder. I'll call them today
|
| Also, Dr Stixrud has trained tutors in a database specialized in kids with special needs. I believe they come to you; same as Lab School |
|
Dr. Bill Stixrud is now in a tutoring collaborative with McLean School of Maryland in Potomac. The name of it is: KnowlEdge. Dr. Stixrud & McLean are providing tutoring to public and independent school students - not just McLean students. Bill started this tutoring collaborative because he wanted the combined expertise of the McLean classroom teachers, all of whom have received training through his tutoring course. They work with students in elementary grades through high school, and specialize in reading, writing, mathematics, science and history; in addition, the tutors will address any organizational issues, study skills and test taking strategies. If you are interested check out the website for more details: http://www.mcleanschool.org/knowledge/ or you can contact them for more info at 240.395.0690 or jwhichard@mcleanschool.org. Good Luck!

thanks for the great info on Stixrud. Now that you mention it, I have seen their mailings.
I called Lab, they charge $97 per session. I guess that's the going rate these days - ugh..... |
| Original Lab poster here. Best $97 per hour we ever spent! |
|
OP here - tell me more! I was a little weary of the fact that they used people they "train" verses actual teachers.
But I will spend the money if it is worth it...PBJ all summer long for us! |
| My tutor charges $35/hr, just FYI. |
| PP - what does she/he tutor? what are the qualifications or certifications? |
Where are you located? How many times a week are you considering? My wife is a trained special educator (8 years of experience in MCPS) and she confirmed that $95 is the going rate for the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area. |
| I am in Chevy Chase. What types of students does she tutor? |
|
That would be $152,000 if done full time
for a school year. How much does a special education teacher earn? |
| We use Huntington Learning Center (Springfield/Franconia area) and it's $55/hr. They use a curriculum and we've been pleased with them. |
| I have a friend, a special education teacher who is looking to get into tutoring. (He is not working this year has been working with the most profoundly disabled students for 20 years and is looking to switch to typical students or those without multiple disabilities.) It is a bad job market out there, no one is hiring. What is the best way to go to get into tutoring? |
